Field trials for the
B.C. Summer
Games are set
for May 23 at
Haley Park in
Trail. Results
from the trials will
determine. the 36
spots on the
team. Beyond
the usual
jumping,

_ throwing and

running events,
the trials will also
feature the eight-
event octathion
for boys and five-
event pentathion
for girls. To
compete in the
trials athletes
must have been
born in 1977 or
"78 and must
reside within the
Zone 1
boundaries —
from Grand
Forks in the west
to Golden in the
north and the
B.C./Alberta
border in the
east. Qualifying
athletes receive
free
transportation to
the Games,
accommodation
and a meals. The
trials. will be held
rain or. shine. For

For a guy who doesn’t hit a tonne of homers,
Terry Taranoff sure knows how to make them
count when he does bang them out.

Taranoff hit a third-inning grand slam off
Pete Evdokimoff at Kinnaird Park Monday
night as Banjo’s Pub got its first win of the
Castlegar Men’s Commercial Fastball League
season, 9-2 over Labatts.

“It was my grand slam that did it, I mean

I’m not going to brag about it or anything,”
joked Taranoff about his first homer in the

‘team’s third game.

Taranoff said he thought the fielder
misplayed the ball and probably could have it.
But Evdokimoff said Banjo’s player/coach

was just being modest.
‘ “Sure he (the fielder) could have had it, ifhe

had 10-foot arms,” Evdokimoff said. “No, no,

that was a well hit ball as far as I was
concerned.

“I just threw him the wrong pitch at the
right time for him..And that led to a bunch of
runs ina hurry,” he said

Taranoff admitted he was waiting for his
pitch and Evdokimoff served it up.

“I was definitely waiting for it, I think it was
a change up, actually,” Taranoff said.

Evdokimoff wasn't aided much in the cause
by his defence, which made several errors in
the loss.

“Banjo’s took advantage of our fielding
miscues coupled with two or three good hits
and away they went,” said Evdokimoff, who
went the distance in taking his second loss of

the season.

Darcy Dixon hit another homer right after
Taranoff to make it 6-2 in the third and Banjo’s
cruised to victory behind the pitching of Eli
Soukeroff.

Evdokimoff said teams in this league just
can’t get away with making mistakes.

“In our league all the teams are very
competitive on any given night, so anytime you
make two or three fielding miscues you’re
going to pay the price, and we paid the price.”

Labatts, which remains winless at 0-2-1, led
the game 2-0 after two innings.

Banjo’s, last year’s regular season champs,
improves to 1-1-1.

Banjo’s was back in action Tuesday night as
they played the Castlegar Merchants at
Kinnaird. In the other game Tuesday, the
Valley Royals met the Nelson Athletics at
Playmore Park. Results weren’t available at
press time.

Labatts plays the Royals at Appledale Park
tonight, while the Athletics meet the
Merchants at Kinnaird Thursday night to
round out the week’s schedule. ~
