Wednesday, September 23, 1992 @ @ President Michelle Hudema returns to Castlegar after stay with Japanese families “It was a once in a lifetime experience and I'd definitely go again,” are the words Castlegar 4-H Club Presi- dent Michelle Hudema used to describe her exchange trip to Japan this summer. The Castlegar 4-H Club members met at the home of Carol Baker on Aug. 23 for a ‘Welcome Home, Michelle’ party. Two 4-H food members — Caitlin Spilker and Carol Baker — planned, decorat- ed, cooked and hosted the party which also signified the completion of their Unit 1 4-H Foods Project. Following the meal, Hudema provided authentic paper for the girls to try their hand at the Japanese art of origami. She also brought along her comical alarm clock which tells you to “Wake Up etc.” in the Japanese lan- guage. Hudema dressed food leader Linda Baker up in the Japanese kimono and showed the girls her two photo albums of her trip and a home video. The 4-H members found the whole event very educa- tional and enjoyable. Hudema was in Japan for a month where she was host- ed by the Imanishi family at Kasumi, Japan and the Eto family at Chiba, Japan. Hudema was also chosen to attend the Idaho confer- ence because of her fine standing in the 4-H Regional Public Speaking contest held in Cranbrook earlier this year. The 4-H members now have some penpal from oth- er clubs in the province and they will be looking for more new members when the club year begins in January. On Sept. 20th, 4-H mem- bers did some fundraising in the form of a garage sale and pony rides at the Ryson rid- ing ring at the end of 14th Avenue. oe This Saturday, the 4-H achievement will be held at Ryson’s also. Awards Night is sched- uled for Oct. 24th at the Scout Hall. The 4-H members meet every second Thursday at Kinnaird Middle School at 7 p.m. The next meeting will be held Thursday. Interested youths and their parents are welcome to attend. ANDERSON INSURANCE Local men take a Trek for Life @ Castlegar cyclists ride for lung disease Castlegar residents were among 204 cyclists who ped- aled 200 kilometres last week- end to help fight lung disease in the British Columbia Lung Association’s Eighth Annual Bicycle Trek for Life and Breath. The two Castlegar trekkers are Leon Arishenkoff and Kei- th Shelefontiuk. So far, their efforts contributed over $130,000 for lung disease re- search, health education and community programs. And it’s not over — more donations are expected to come in, and British Columbia Lung Asso- ciation hopes these bring the final total to the 1992 goal of $160,000. Joined by trekkers from all over the province, the Castle- gar group cycled the two-day route that began and ended in Fort Langley, and passed through Lynden, Sumas, Linbdell Beach and Cultus Lake the first day and Cultus Lake, Abbotsford and Bradner the second. “The cyclists showed enor- mous dedication and enthusi- asm for raising money for the association, with each trekker raising an average of $637. We are proud of their efforts, and hope the event increased awareness of the importance of exerciser to good lung health,” said BCLA president John Borthwick. Each trekker was required to raise a minimum of $350 in donations before the ride.
