AS I SEE IT WITH AS I SEE IT HARRY PEPPER Well, I could say I told you so, but I don't think that would be appropriate because I hesitate to flaunt my far-seeing talents before the perusers of my column. However, I am going to give Coach Joey Zanussi and his Caps a real nice pat on the back for the grand way in which they backed up my judgment in their s,eries with the Trail Silver Kings. There is an old saying which puts across the following message: "A team which won't be beat, can't be beat", and I put a great deal of store in this. Let's say, three straight over the Grand Forks boys and prove it, hey! While in Calgary over the past week, I managed to take in one of the final games between the Calgary Cubs and thr Foothills Giants. Both are Calgary teams and they represent the best that Alberta has to offer in the field of Senior Baseball. The League is called Alberta Major Baseball League . They have recruited far and wide for players, just as Penticton and Kelowna did a year ago, but from what I saw they would have a real hard time with any of the teams _in the West Kootenay League. Anyway, this game I saw was going along pretty good, 2-1 Giants, until the eighth when the roof fell in on Bob Baird, the Cub pitcher, when the smoke cleared after a combination of wild pitches, throwing errors and a scratch hit or two, the score read 10-1 and I remarked to my companions at the game that I had seen enough. They didn 't hesitate to go along with me. For future reference it might . be a good idea to keep an eye . on the Alberta tournament schedule , because I think an all-star team from this area could make a killing, financially, by entering some of their tournaments . Also, while I was up in Calgary I had a chance to talk to one of Rossland's illustrious daughters who is making quite a splash in the softball circles of the big town, playing for the Rockettes, an Intermediate WITH HARr Y PEPi>ER 1 "A" team in the City League. Carol Stanton led her team in home runs, one grand slam, and two in one game, and also was tied for the league lead in RBl's. As I have said many times before, there is no substitute for class and that's one thing Carol has in abundance. She was telling me that she has been offered a job as playingcoach of a ladies basketball team this coming season, but she thinks she will turn it down and just play. I would like to add a note of interest here to anyone going to the Foothills metropolis. Don't ever leave without taking a trip to the top of the "Husky Tower" . Boy! What a thrill!_ The tower is 625 feet high, has a high speed elevator, 63 seconds from bottom to top, a revolving restaurant, one complete circle every hour, and a lounge on the mezzanine above the observation deck. From here one can see to the farthest reaches of this most remarkable of cities. I remember that I mentioned in my last column that I was hoping to ·see my new granddaughter . Well, I did and I wasn't disappointed--s.he's a real doll. It may be a little early to start talking about hockey, but ' I have been thinking about it and I'm wondering what is in store for the young Warriors in the coming season. I will have to talk to some of the exec members to see if they have any clues on coaching or player prospects. I heard one rumor recently that the Kelowna executive have been trying to lure Rossland's slick centreman, John Stanton, into their camp. If they are successful this would be quite a blow to the young Warriors' chances During the next week . I will try and give you some facts next Thursday. Last week ' s column was a real good example of what someone can do with inform ation that is incorrect and I will have to say sorry to my readers for dispensing the information about the senior playoffs which I reported on which was not official.
