Hydro announced Thursday that work has started on the first stages of a $330 million contract to build its Revelstoke Dam, spillway and powerhouse structure, Located in Little Dalles Canyon, about five kilo- metres upstream from Rev- elstoke on the Columbia River, the dam. will be 152 metres high, 457 metres long, and have an earthfill embank- ment 1,158 metres long. Electricity will be produced from six 450-megawatt gen- erating units. Work on the project has been hampered. Crews have been faced with rockslides and large blocks of rock that had to be removed. It cost the crown cor- poration $3 million to secure with anchors a massive rock block above the dam and §2.8 million to excavate 250,000~ cubic feet of rock because it * rested ona weak shear plane. An additional $5.5 mil- lion was spent on moving the centre line of the earth dam when it was discovered that there were several deep pockets beneath the site of the foundation. * The current total esti- mate for the project is $1.6 billion, $100 million more than.the original estimate four years ago. The brochure is part of * an ongoing program to in- form the public about the activities of the society with particular reference to the Miners’ Union Hall. A crew is currently working four days a week at the Miners’ Hall in Rossland, funded by a Canada Works Grant received last month. Soon to be visible changes include installation of win- dows and removal of the scaffolding. Society president Eileen Fletcher invites anyone in- terested in viewing the hall, to stop by during crew work- ing hours for a guided tour. Fletcher, who is also project co-ordinator, finds the restoration a challenge, as do the other workers on the site. "When the situation seems impossible, we are encouraged by the know- ledge we are working toward a very exciting and worth- while goal... We will have both a theatre with seating for 220 and a meeting/lodge room which will seat 110 ... We're going to have an excellent community hall in an interesting historical package.” The Heritage Society brochure is available at the Miners’ Union Hall, or by mail from the Society at Box 1453, Rossland, B.C.. The Heritage Society will be holding an “Open House” at the Miners’ Union Hall on May 25 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Area residents are invited to come and tour the building to see the restor- ation in progress. There will be a slide presentation during the af- ternoon explaining the proj- ect, the funding and the uses the society sees for the building when completed. Members of the society will be available to answer questions and coffee will be served. _ Now exhibiting art of B.C. children 192 outstanding works - Residents of the Koot- enays now have the chance to see the B.C.
