CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, June 16, 1960 “Student Ousted from Job by Union Asks: How can Dear Bir: At the end of the academic year at the University of B.O., I went to the Natlonal Employment Service located on the campus and inquired about summer employment. ‘Telling ‘the interviewer that my home is Castlegar, I was told that I had no worrles—there ore plenty of jobs in Castlegar. But, I explained, they are union Jobs and I do not belong to a union and am quite concerned about “getting in,” as the expression goes, ‘The interviewer pointed out that labor unlons allow students to worl on 4 permit. . This good news gave me o ‘great spiritual uplift and I came home with high hopes of getting a job ‘and thus paying my debts and sav- ing a few dollars for the coming + semester. A couple of days after my ar- rival I went looking for work. My first attempt was, successful; I was put to work immediately after my application, Two hours later my hands were all bloody from broken blisters, but I paid no heed—my heart was singing because my hop- es had been realized. But. the next day when I went to the union office, my heart sang less for I was told that I could not join the union, In cold anger, I . tried to explain my position. The girl in the office said that she would write to the union head of- fice for information on students. In the meantime I kept my mouth shut and worked, hoping that I would be given a work per- mit, (Sounds ludicrous—o. permit to work.) A couple of days later I phoned the office ‘and was told that I definitely could not join, nor get a permit. My heart and hopes fell but I kept working. A couple of weeks later I no~ tieed a gentl walking around Dr. Luke Smith SMITH KENNELS — the project and chatting with the laborers, I sensed that this was the union business agent and knew he meant trouble. He came over and asked what local I was in, Knowing it wos no use to He, I told him that I was not in the union but was a student and wanted to either join or get a get a work permit, He told me to come to the office and he would do what he could, Entering the office after work I saw the receptionist give a receipt for union dues to a boy who was not more than 18. 4 ‘The union gentleman who had spoken to.me on the job looked at me. that he had told me to drop ‘in, I was told that the boy had just walked out was golng to the pro- Ject where I worked, He then said the most he could do for me was to take my name, (How many times have we heard this polite brush off —don't call me, I'll call you). _ I still did not understand. I asked coldly, perhaps too. coldly. “You mean you're taking me off the job? Putting me.on the street just like that?” The unlon gentleman looked. surprised and sald, “Call it tliat if call it?) There was a fair amount of conversation, mostly on my part, and it went something lke the fol~ lowing: “Look here, if you fellows, the werking men, do not let-me ‘work, you are greatly hampering my chances to get an education.” (The “[" refers to all university students who can not ‘get a job because they are not in the labor union. And very few of our local students are working because of the scar- eity of non-union jobs.) “You are closing the door to us, the students ATTE NTION: “Pet ‘Owners — ‘Kennels | THURSDAY, JUNE 23°“: AND GROOMING -PHONE 90045 _ STRINGS CREEK. will he at BOARDING; CLIPPING INVITATION 70 TENDER we Villag ie of Kinnaird WATER raysreM IMPROVEMENTS “Tender « ‘Sealed: tender Pp will be received you lke.” (What can I, or anybody, | = from) the working class, but leav- ing {t wide open to those who go ‘to college with a ‘pilver..apoon.’ ' “phe students are the ones who ‘will be running the country some day ond if students from the work- ing class cannot make. the grade because. the Iabor union stops us from working, students from the rich clasa will be. the only ones making {t and running the country. “These people will not know what it is like to get out and really work, and they will not really un- derstand the working man's posi- tion, Even though they will say, yes we know the working man hos it tough, they will have never held a shovel in near numb hands, never have cursed every stone’ on a project from~ here to hades and back, never have felt devouring thirst that cannot be quenched because their “stomachs were already bloated from too much water but the intense heat and dust and hard work kept them contin- ually thirsty, nor have they ever worked in’ a torrential downpour until water ran‘ all the way down their. backsides, “hey, the’ students from the rich' class, will sympathize’ With ths .working man, but will they eally help?
