WANTED-—Rolled top desk, Taggart, Allan ulars of any security which may-be held Some interesting cal ions may be deduced from these figures. During the year there were 109,500 shifts worked, equal to 300 years for one man’s work. © At the above ratio, if a man worked in the mine for 300 years he would meet with eleven accidents, or one every twenty-seven years and three months. If he stopped work a week before his accident was due and took a week or two off at the Hot Springs or on the coast, he might escape mishap for another period of twenty-seven years and three months. The figures at least show that mining is not so hazar- dous as is generally supposed, prob- ably no more so than farming, where men get kicked by mules or tangled up in threshing machines. SUPREME COURT DECIDES Former Mayor's Sale of $50,000 Debentures Held Invalid on Appeal of the Purchasers— A Long Fight Against the Dlegal Oon- tract. : The issue of debentures which” caused a bitter fight against Mayor Scott’s administration has’ at last been declared invalid by the supreme court of Ontario, and thus the citi- zens win the contest which has been carried on in the courts for sever:l- years. The news was received in the city this morning through a tele- gram addressed to J. L. G. Abbott, the city solicitor, from McCarthy, Osler, Hoskin & Creelman, the bar- ters in Toronto whom he had ap- pointed to take charge of the case for the city. Under Mayor Scott’s administra- tion two by-laws were passed for the issue of $50,o00 debentures. Mr. Scott went to Toronto ‘at “the city’s expense and, without adver- tising as the law. reauires, sold them’ to the Trust & Guarantee company of Toronto at a certain | price, with a secret agreement pels afterwards became notorious A. This: ag constituted the debentiires a ‘first i mortgage prior to’ all” other issues and gave the purchasers a practical veto on any further i issues When the-facts:be ‘public, held an indignation meeting to pro- test against the contract and, after the Scott party had‘ been defeated at the next election, the new coun- cil refused to deliver the debentures. The city had the by-law quashed by order of the court in this province, and passed a new one, under which the debentures were advertised for sale in the open ‘market and were sold to the Bank of British North America at a -much higher price than that provided under the Scott contract. Proceedings were then begun in the Ontario courts, the Trust & Guarantee company suing the city for di Fe for the livery of the debentures, The decision- was given in favor of the city and the Trust & Guarantee company ap- pealed to ‘the Ontario supreme court. “This appeal has now been decided in favor of the city and the To Organize Sons of Enuland Preliminary steps are being taken was held last evening in the office of Fred Starkey, of the Parsons to organize a lodge of the Sons of England in.this city.
