He “got his act together” four years ago and should
graduate this year with a bachelor of arts degree in
criminology and political science at Simon Fraser
University.

OFFERS HELP

Between studies, Petroff is a volunteer for the John
Howard Society, a charitable organization whose staff
and volunteers work with prisoners and parolees.

The society also runs a school education program —
and that’s where Petroff fits in,

“When I was about 10 or 11, I thought prison would
be fun,” wrote one Grade 10 student after listening to

Petroff. “I thought you would lift football
and, oll cooked meals just ‘nels tee’ ta

**No worries about money or anything, just sll fun
and games. But, after your speech .. . I have been
thinking twice.

Reviews like that make Petroff's day.

The first 30 years of his life were a travesty,
beginning with a broken home and four years of physical
and sexual abuse from his first foster father.

Subsequent foster parents couldn't help him and he
became a “street kid” in Toronto. At 14 he left home, now
knowing the difference between “happy and sad.”

“All I knew was pain and no pain. How I got no pain
was through drugs and alcohol because it numbed the
pain.”

GOT ARRESTED

He was first arrested at 16 as a vagrant and sent toa
reform school run by Jesuits. He was released the
following year and worked briefly before he got “wired to
speed again.”

“I was just busted so many times I can't even count
the charges,” Petroff said inside a spartan office at the
society’s Vancouver headquarters.

The society teams up an ex-convict, male or female,
and a society volunteer. In the classroom, the ex-convict
shares personal life experiences, including stories of
prison life, while the other volunteer describes the

judicial system.

Last year in British Columbia, mogtly in the
Vancouver area, six teams of volunteers gave almost 200
lectures to more than 4,000 students,

“I try to reach these kids the way I wish someone
had done to me and give mea shake and say, ‘This is what
it’s really like out there. It's not like Miami Vice, or Stir
Crazy,’ " says Petroff, whose faded jeans and worn
running shoes are strikingly offset by a new,
short-sleeved T-shirt with SFU emblazoned across the
front.

Grey is beginning to show in his dark hair. His face,
now full of life and exuberance, still shows the sculptor’s
marks of past confrontations with knuckles, boots, and
the hard surface of streets and sidewalks.

He begins a lecture by telling students he's in
university, to show that “ex-cons can make it in straight
society.”

“I tell them that we (ex-cons) are normal people that
made abnormal! choices, or ill-informed choices.”

The idea is not to scare the students, but to make
them understand that they control their fate.

“T've been doing one-on-one (counselling) for three
years since I got my (life) together,” says Petroff.

He tells a story about a student who was on the
fringe of delinquency. As he tells it, his voice starts to
break and his eyes begin to glisten.
