(CP) - For the last 60 years, Gilles Croteau's company has been shipping maple syrup by train in huge, sterilized tank cars to U.S. markets asfar away as San Jose, Calif. Indeed, it was the railway that lured maple-syrup producers to Plessisville in the first place. Now Canadian National wants to close the branch line that serves Plessisville one of more than a dozen money-losing branch lines the major railways want to abandon in Quebec within the next year. Plessisville Mayor Madeleine Dus. seault predicted a bleak future for her town’s fledgling industrial park if the line is abandoned. She said companies won't settle in the region without guarantees of low-cost, bulk-material train trans port “We already feel terribly isolated and neglected — as if we were unknown territory,” said Dusseault, whose town of 10,000 lies halfway between Montreal and Quebec City. “The psychological impact of losing the railway will crush us.” CN would like to abandon one third of its track in Eastern Canada. CP says about half of its tracks in Quebec bring in only a “minuscule” amount of business. CN spokesman Jean-Guy Brodeur says he sympathizes with businesses that might suffer when branch lines are closed. “But CN is not a charity,” Brodeur said in an interview. “And its vocation isn't economic expansion and development either. A record number of Canad special role, then CN should be compensated.” “CN isn't only a corporation, it's a public service,” replies Croteau, whose maple sugar co-operative stands to lose $1.75 million in business in the United States if the rail line goes. “Bell Canada and Hydro Quebec don't make money when they bring phone and power lines up North and into Gaspe, but they still do so,” adds Croteau, who says trucks are just too expensive. In the last 18 months, CN \and Canadian Pacific have filed. requests with the National Transportation Agency for permission to close 60 branch lines across Canada, most of them in Quebec and eastern Ontario, The annual average used to be 10 requests a year, Paul-Andre Fournier, in charge of rail transport at the provincial Transport Department, said Quebec is worried that branch-line closings will leave taxpayers picking up the tab for extra wear and tear by trucks on the province's roads. In many cases an alternative to abandoning the branch lines may be to sell them to private, short-line operators, as many U.S. railway companies have done, he said.
