Button Wisdom

The right or wrong kind of
buttons can make or break the
good appearance of a garment.
That is why it is so important
to choose new buttons wisely.

For example, we must al-
ways buy go-togethers for best
effect, Wood or leather buttons
for a tweed garment or for
heavy knitwear; ivory and plast-
ic for cottons; jewelled, crystal,
jet, pearl or porcelain for dressy
fabrics,

We should always buy but-
tons that are guaranteed wash-
able. Every garment we wear
has to be either washed or dry
cleaned frequently, and if the
buttons are not wash-

in the fabric. Choose square or
geometric buttons for stripes,
and shiny metal balls for checks.

Whenever possible, it is wise
to leave the button choosing un-
til after the dress has been made.

sewn together to become a new,
strong centre which will. give
many more months of warmth

An old flannelette nightgown,

made into a warm nightie for a

The back part of a man’s
shirt is usually still good after
the collar and sleeves are worn
out. When hemmed neatly all

pots and pans, to pat lettuce
and other vegetables dry after
washing and to wipe off meats
before cooking.

many other housecleaning chores,
Old woolen socks are ideal
polishers for shining shoes, buff-
ing wax floors or polishing silver.
The good top of a woolen sock
also makes a good windbreaker
cuff or storm cuff for a coat.

Renew Old Luggage

If your old luggage is looking
old and battered from time and
travel, you can make it look pre-
sentale enough for more mileage
at very little cost.

First of all give it a good
cleaning inside and out with the
vacuum cleaner, using the cre-
vice tool to get into the pock-
ets and corners.

When the case is thoroughly
clean, glue down any loose bind-
ings or peeling leather. Then

give it a coat of leather paint.

The new leather paint gives a
leather-like finish that will fool
even an expert at a short dis-
tance.

When the paint ‘s dry, give
it a good coat of wax for a shin-
ing finish and to protect the

paint,

The entire process takes only
about an hour of your time and
the cost is about one dollar, It
is really worthwhile when you
consider that you have saved
yourself the price of a new piece
of luggage.

Laundry Tips

To avoid stretching a sweat-
er during washing, never lift it
with your fingers while it is soak-
| ing wet. The weight of the water

will pull it out of shape at the
portion held in your fingers. To
lift, slip your cupped hands
under the sweater while it is
still submerged in water, Squeeze
the water out gently as you lift,
making sure the entire weight
of the sweater is supported by
your cupped hands.

To hasten drying time, fold
it neatly in a turkish towel and
run it through the wringer. Or,
if you have an automatie wash-
er, turn the dial to ‘dry’, place
the sweater in a small bag and
spin out the excess moisture.

Slip covers should be stretch-
ed over the furniture they be-
long on while they are still damp.

They will dry to an-exact fit
and will look just as neat as
though they were ironed. It
saves the work of ironing.

Glazed chintz curtains should
not be wrung out. This creates
deep down wrinkles that are al-
most impossible to iron out. Wash
lightly and let drip dry in a
breeze, While still quite damp,
iron them on the right side to
preserve their gloss.
