From the day we are born we begin to lose something. We oppose change Such things as, loss of a love object, or self-esteem, or respect, or even a role can bring about reactive depression. This is the Poison Prevention Week is coming up on March 19. It’s a time to raise ‘awareness of the causes of poisoning in the home, Look at your home from a child's point of view and see if the cleansers, medications ‘and other potential poisons are safely out of reach. It could save a life. Those tiny button batteries used in calculators and Watches can present.a poison risk'to young children. Be sure to dispose of them safely. When using those effervescent tablets like calcium, Vitamin C or Alka Selzer, allow the bubbles to cease before drinking. No more bubbles means the tablet is fully dissolved which will enhance absorption, By the way, Alka-Selzer is mainly A.S.A. and Sodium Bicarbonate. So if you shouldn't have any A.S.A. or take in too much sodium, you probably shouldn't use Alka-Selzer.Check with our pharmacists If you're unsure. Like a tiny pebble the losses until it’s like a giant boulder sitting on their heads. This spells clinical depression that won't go away. Strangely enough, the only way to end the depression is to face the losses head on. This means pain and.grief. We run from pain. We take pills to avoid pain, we fill our lives so full that pain has no room to come in. Life is dull, boring, and we are sad deep inside. Because we cling to posses- sions, ideas and people we experience losses very deeply. The problem is not the loss; it is the attachment to the lost Object. We simply won't let it go. The story of Jan, the wife of Dave Dravecky the pitcher for the San Francisco Giants who lost his arm to cancer, is a won- derful example of the healing that comes from grieving. Jan succumbed to a severe depression after dealing with the loss of her husband's health, Her father died in this same period of time. Jan remembers saying to her- self as she stood by his grave, “I don’t have time for this.” No time to grieve. Finally Jan could not cope with the depression and sought help. In counselling, she discovered that it was normal to feel what she was feeling in light of all of her losses. One day, sitting all alone, they camie to mind and the tears began to flow. Instead of “getting busy” she let the pain ™ surface and in her own words, “the tears came from the tips of my toes to the top of my head. I sobbed—it was so cleansing.” The grieving process does not run smoothly. It is a cycle of denial, refusing to accept the loss. I have said to myself in these past years of change, ‘This is what is, Wilma, accept it.” Then there is anger at the unfairness of life. We stamp our feet like a spoiled child and say “no”. Then depression or hope- lessness sets in. The cycle contin- ues until acceptance of the loss emerge with the realization that one can survive! In all of this we need support and good friends, we don’t need to face this pain all alone. It's OK to ask for help. It gives us hope to realize that others have felt as we do and come through it. There is life after loss. Believe me, I know. NEC life skills workshop set The West Kootenay National Exhibition Centre will offer a workshop and demonstration teaching self-sufficient lifeskills on Sunday from 12 - 4:30 p.m. Rick Bivar, a 20 year flint napper who takes special interest in indigenous technologies, will demonstrate fire making, and flint napping. He will also teach participants how to use local plants to make twine—a fibre used to produce necessities such as a basket, bow string, or snare. Flint napping is a miilion-year- old technology used by our human ancestors from every part of the world. The stone is chipped to make cutting implements such as an arrowhead or axe. The skill of making fire, or an ax, is fundamental to the sur- vival of a human being isolated from modern day conve- niences—a highly useful skill for people travelling through wilderness areas. After several gallons of coffee and much discussion Moms and Babes was formed with the sup- port of the Kootenay Columbia Child Care Society. Since then the group has orga- nized five sessions, each 10 Program in second year share common concerns and explore topics of interest relating to child care Over the last two yéars over 40 women have utilized the sessions for socializing, information shar- ing and, most of all, a:scheduled morning away from home Some of the original alumni, such as Katrina Edwards, are still involved in helping provide those same opportunities to newer members of the group. Edwards has taken on the role of coordinator of the program and is responsible for contacting speakers, taking registration fees and attending the sessions. Julia Stockhausen, a pre-natal instructor, has been credited for weeks long which f d guest speakers, videos and snacks. The friendly and informal atmosphere provides a comfort- able setting in which moms can P the program to moms- tc-be. Registration is $15 which will be collected at the first session attended. st KOOT. These individuals, each a genius in his own field, had a ke i isabi and re to attain the highest achieve- ments in his field by compensat- ing and making the ‘most of his abilities, rather than focusing’ on the disabilities. Bruce Jenner, Cher, Jackie Stewart and Henry Winkler all have a learning disability. Today, it is estimated that one in 10 Canadians suffer from a learning disability ranging from mild to severe. This complex group of disorders is caused by a dysfunction of the central ner- vous system which results in inaccurate information being received throughout the senses, much like a bad telephone con- nection or a fuzzy photograph. Youngsters with LD are some- times labelled lazy, unmotivated, and losers. Many of these children will fail in school unless their disabil- ities are discovered early and diagnosed properly. Proper diagnosis will help the child receive assistance in edu- cation, medical, psychological and social services. With this help, they will develop their strengths and potential. ‘ Adults with LD frequently have difficulty in one or more of the following areas: reading comprehension, spelling, written expression, math computation, and problem solving. These disabilities can make it difficult for individuals to find or keep a job, or to be promoted to a level that reflects their capabilities. The Learning Disabilities Association (LDA) is a non- profit organization dedicated to advance the education, employ- ment, social development, legal rights and general well-being of people with learning disabilities. Learning Disabilities Month is March. For more information on LD, there will be a display for the month of March at the Castlegar and District Public Library or call Castlegar Chapter president Bernice Beckstead. We weld anything...
