Yesterday the organizers ofthe race invited some of the local media to take a ride in @ne’ of the jet boats. I was informed on Monday that I'd be the one to represent the Castlegar News. I didn’t sleep very well Monday night. Although it was warm outside, I'm sure the heat didn’t have anything to do with my constant tossing and turning. In fact I'm positive that it was an impending story assigned to me for Tuesday morning that kept me awake most of the night. T don't know a lot about jet boats but I do know one thing. They go fast — very fast. In fact, depending on the class size of the jet boat, they can reach speeds of up to 150 miles per hour. Like I said, I didn't sleep very well on Monday night. ‘The media day was staged at 4:30 yesterday afternoon, and at 3 p.m., while I had a coffee with some of the staff at the Castlegar News, the jokes began. “Well Surj, it looks like you only ‘have 1’ hours to live,” remarked editor Ron Norman. “Oh, don't worry, going on a jet boat is just like going on a ferris wheel.” “More like the Zipper,” added reporter Mike Kalesniko. The i I put some papers on the front seat of the car before I drive back home. Shortly afterwards I was driving towards the boat launch at Gyro Park in Trail, the destination of my first and certainly last encounter with this beast of machinery known as the jet boat. And as Gyro Park drew closer and closer, one thing kept going through my mind. It was the comment Doug Deproy, head of the committee organizing this weekend's jet boat race, made to me over the phone Monday: “Surj, we're going to take you on a ride at near-racing speeds.” READY TO RACE... Trail jet boat racer Alex Millar is all set to take on the rest in this weekend's jet Naturally, I just couldn't wait to get to Trail. Soon I was standing on the dock looking down at what seemed to be a fairly thin jet boat with three seats and a huge engine in the back. I couldn't help stop looking at the three small seats and noticing how there was not a seat belt in sight. Oh, that's just great, I thought to myself. I'm just moments away from taking a ride in this jet boat, “at near racing speeds” and there are no seat belts. Who's the idiot here, Surj? We were taking turns riding in the jet boat, which belongs to Trail racer Albert Benson. Trail Ald. Sandy Santori, and some other guy from the local media, were the first two to take a ‘spin. I watched from the dock as Benson made his jet boat leap into the air on several occasions. After the first ride, Santori climbed out of the jet boat, took off his life jacket, pulled out a deck of cigarettes and asked, “Can I smoke now?” After witnessing the jet boat bolt into the air and scream across the Columbia River at speeds of up to 75 to 80 miles an hour, I felt like asking a similar question to Santori’s. “Can I leave now?” “Alright, who's next?” asked Benson. I just glanced across the river at Cominco making it look like I was more interested with the smoke coming out of the huge concrete pillars than I was with taking a ride in the jet boat. I kept looking at Cominco until finally two other media types volunteered for the next ride. After a short while they returned. Now I knew there was no avoiding “the death ride on the Columbia.” Deproy helped me on with my life jacket. This thing had more straps on it than you could shake a stick at. Two of the straps went between my legs. “The reason for that is because if your life jacket comes flying off you'll rip your skin pretty good. This way you'll only skin your crotch,” Deproy told me. Well that’s all I needed to hear. Now I'm feeling boat races to be held between Trail and Castlegar on the Columbia River CasNews Photo by Suri Rattan JET BOATERS . . . Albert Benson gives two members of the local media a taste of what life in a jet boat is much better about taking this ride. A radio reporter climbed into the boat first, then Benson got in. I don't know why, but for some reason when I got into the boat, Benson turned to me and said, “You really don't want to do this, do you?” I didn't say anything, I just smiled and looked for a place to hang on. As Benson started up his jet boat, I suddenly had a flash back to when I was a kid and I climbed into a seat on the roller coaster at the Pacific hibition in V. for the first time. I didn’t like that feeling then and I didn't like this feeling now. As we slowly cruised out into the river the radio reporter suddenly pulled out a small tape recorder and began doing an interview with Benson. Now? You want to interview him now? I thought. My God man, let him concentrate on getting us, or at least me, back alive. Some guys will do anything for a story! As soon as the interview was over, all hell broke lose. Benson suddenly accelerated and the boat lurched into the air. Millar ready to race By CasNews Staff in which he was involved in all about. Benson will be one of several racers who will take part in this weekend's jet boot races. — CosMews Photo by $urj Rotten The boat kept lurching into the air and when it came down and hit the water, it slammed hard. When Benson would turn the boat, it would lean over so much that I was sure the boat would tip over. For some strange reason I began thinking about my shoes, and how they would "pose a problem as I tried to swim-to shore: We went at such a speed that bugs would smack into my face, and water splashed into my lap (that was the only reason my pants were wet). We turned around and began racing back down river. As water rolled from my eyes across my face, I glanced aver to the radio reporter just to make sure he hadn't been struck with the urge to ‘do ariother interview. Benson had flipped his boat about two weeks ago during a race in Idaho. I couldn't help think about that as we screamed past Cominco. Soon the ride was over. Benson cut the power on the boat and we began drifting towards the dock. In January I took a skiing lesson for the first time in my life and after experiencing the T-bar, I was sure there wasn't anything in the world more frightening than a T-bar. I was wrong. In 1985 he competed in build the motor up,” Millar Two local racers will be among those competing for a total of $10,000 in cash at this weekend's jet boat races. The races will be held Saturday and Sunday along the Columbia River between Trail and Castle. gar. One of the racers is Al bert Benson of Trail. He recently returned from a race in Whitebeard, Idaho a crash Another Trail resident, 34-year-old Alex Millar, will also be taking to the rapids of the Columbia this weekend. Millar, a boat builder, has been jet boat racing for four years, and recently returned from competing in the world championships in New Zealand. He came in 25th and was the only overseas boat to finish. the world championship races in Mexico and came in third out of 60 boats. Millar said this week end’s race should be pretty easy for most of the racers because the Columbia River-does not have many obstacles. “It shouldn't be a hard race. It’s the sort of race where you're inclined to told the Castlegar News in an interview. He added that the key to jet boat racing is to race in a straight line as much as possible. “The boats are quite durable. Unless you sink the boat, it'll disappear, but generally the boats very durable,” Millar said. He added that the Col umbia is “an excellent river to race on.” Wings surprise Edmonton as they take series lead EDMONTON (CP) — In some circles, Jacques Demers is considered a genius among NHL coaches. Tuesday night he came up with another brilliant game plan and his Detroit Red Wings followed it to near perfection for a 3-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers in Game 1 of best-of seven Campbell Conference final “We played systematic, disciplined hockey and we played it as a team,” said Demers after the game “They play as disciplined a game as you'll see in the NHL,” said Oiler defenceman Randy Gregg. In the other series, the defending Stanley Cup champion Montreal Canadiens are in Philadelphia tonight with the Flyers holding a 1-0 lead. The Wings got goals from Steve Yzerman, Joey Kocur and Gerard Gallant, a strong defensive showing from everyone and a superb performance from goaltender Greg Stefan. Stefan, who kicked out 31 shots, was a surprise starter after his dispute with Demers and the play of Glen Hanlon in Detroit's series against the Toronto Maple Leafs. FIRST WIN But Stefan, 0-6-0 against Edmonton in his NHL career, came off the bench after sitting out five games to stone the high-powered Oilers. “It was a good move on his (Demers'’) part,” Edmonton coach Glen Sather said of Stefan's start. Stefan was rocked by Marty McSorley when he wandered out of his goal in the first period but came back to make his best stops off the deadliest Oiler sharpshooters — Jari Kurri, Esa Tikkanen, Wayne Gretzky, Paul Coffey and Mark Messier. Coordi tor Katrina Conroy says sifice Janaury 1983, the Wings stymied the Oilers’ offence with a frustrating defensive style. “There was so much holding and hooking on the blueline we couldn't get through,” complained Sather. “That's the style teams play in the playoffs and we know it.” Gretzky said of the clutch-and-grab style that featured non-stop hooking and high-sticking by both teams “We just have to be smarter when we dump the puck in The Wings grabbed a 2-1 first period lead with Yzerman and Kocur sandwiching Edmonton's loné goal, a power play score by Kent Nilsson. They made that“stand up through the second period, largely thanks to Stefan, who turned aside point-blank shots by Tikkanen, Kurri and Gretzky ONE SHOT “(Bob) Probert actually stopped it,” Gretzky said of his shot — the only one he had all night. “It got through the goalie's legs and hit Probert.” Gretzky, who suffered a mild concussion in the final game against the Winnipeg Jets, was flattened late in the second period by Shawn Burr. “I hit my head again, got banged pretty good,” said Gretzky, who sparted a red bruise on his right temple. The Wings threw up a smothering defensive blanket in the third-period: there are few requirements to enter. “We want all the teams to have as much fun as possible. It is great family fun at only $75 per team, it is an affordable tournament,” said Conroy. One of the few regulations is no commercial players. “We want everyone to be on the same footing to start,” Conroy said “Since we are a trophy tournament and not a money tournament it will appeal to teams who may not otherwise par ticipate in competitive slo-pitch.” The Kootenay Columbia Child Care Society is sponsoring a Bavarian gar dens at Kinnaird Park, as part of the SunFest activities, and it will be the only Bavarian gardens sanctioned by SunFest. “There are many licensed establish ments in Castlegar who benefit from the influx of people as a result of SunFest, and we want them to have some of the benefits too” said SunFest chairman Paul Moroso. “There is a lot of new energy and ideas and support from the whole area about this year's SunFest and we anticipate it will have a tremendous spin-off effect on the businesses in Castlegar.” With many of the events for downtown Castlegar and Kinsmen Park on both Saturday and Sunday, the SunFest committee says the economic spin-off will be similar to the recent Lions Club c i Stars looking for players By CasNews Staff The Castlegar Stars split a couple of weekend games here in Kootenay Sot- cer League action. On Sunday the Stars doubled Kimberley Athletics 2-1 but were shut out by Cranbrook Rovers 2-0 on Satur- day in their regular season opener. Head coach Carlos Amaral said his squad is playing short-handed as some of the team's leading goal scorers are injured. “We're having a problem. Our best players are injured and we're looking for players. I don't know what we're going to do,” Amaral told the Castlegar News. Despite the loss to Cranbrook, Amaral said the Stars “played a pretty good game.” “We didn't score on our chances because our goal scorers are not playing. We only had 11 players,” said Amaral. On Sunday the Stars travel to Nelson to take on F.C. Savoy in Kootenay Cup action, which is not a part of league play and Amaral hopes the Stars can pull it together for a victory Ron Remple, who Amaral said “played an excellent game” against Kimberley on Sunday,” is the Stars’ top goaltender this year, as Lino Alves has left the team. Alex Ferreira is the back-up man this season. Francis Baff and Mario Chaves are back this year to help out on defence while Fernando Amaral and Frank Costa resume their positions as mid. fielders.
