By FRANK DERBY -Sun staff writer : Blyane Steinemann is half way through her first year as coach of the Castlegar Figure .Skating Club. She’s in love with the West ‘Kootenay and when the opportuni- ty arose to come to Castlegar, she jumped onit. . : “In the early 80’s I taught for three years in Nelson. Before that I had been coaching in Vancouver for 16 years. When I was fed up with big city life I moved to Nel- son and was very content there, but then the mill closed and figure skating was one of the first casual- ties.” From -Nelson, Steinemann moved on to coaching in Hinton, Alberta, and except for a couple of interludes in Easter Canada and Europe, stayed with the Hinton club until ber move to, Castlegar. Steinemann may very well be the most ienced and qualified petitors, among them a-Junior eo eoadint Chanotgin ‘i skating coach that Castlegar has had.-In ber youth she was a triple gold medalist and placed second in both the Buropean Champi- onships and in World Competi- tion. She had significant parts in three movies made in Paris that featured ber-skating and was also the star of Europe on Ice fortwo years. She bas skated all over the world with the exception of Aus- . tralia and South America, and has skated in front of scveral Euro- pean Royalties. She also found time to take two years of medical school and is fluent in four lan- guages. *- When Steinemann decided to leave Switzerland and come to Vancouver she made the logical progression from performer to coach. Over the years she has trained several gold medal com- P tly Novice Canadian Champion and a Senior Canadian runner up. Steinemann is a tough coach. She comes from the European mold ‘that says discipline, dedica- tion and respect for authority are the basic expectations demanded of students. “Tt takes a while for new pupils ,to get used to me,” said Steine- mann. “At my’ going away party when I Ieft Nelson one of the girls said,’for the first couple of weeks we hated you, but then we saw the improvement in our skating and knew that you were doing it for our benefit.’ My job is not to win popularity contests, but to produce results, The same thing happened here in Castlegar when I took over, but the girls are getting used to my style. I bark at them when they aren't working hard enough sieal : Seniors lead the pack in Kilometer Klub er ee. # a km. In the old days.we would take advantage of Christ- mas holidays:to get in some extra. skating - not anymore, But I do expect my girls'to work, not con- gregate in a comer to chit chat - this is not a social event, I’m seri- ous about my work and expect my skaters to have the same attitude,” You can see the effect of her style on the ice - when prodded by _ Steinemann there may be a flash of anger in the eyes, but suddenly the concentration and effort that was lacking is there, the skater is focused and working. .° ¢ “All the girls are trying. hard,” said Steinemann. “I think we | understand each’ other now and I'm proud of the improvement r they have made. They are doing well in competition and tests.” . There is a mini competition " coming up January 13 in Ross- . land. Geared primarily to the younger skaters it's designed to give them exposure to competition with no pressure and the emphasis placed on having fun. Besides teaching ‘group lessons 'for the Castlegar Figure Skating Club Steinemann has about a dozen pri- vate students and her day can go from 6:00 am to 7:30 or 8:00 pm, “This profession is antisocial,” said Steinemann. “ It’s very demanding, the same idea as bal- let. It’s all I did all my life but I have no regrets. The reward was world travel from the age of 12 and the satisfaction of having hard work pay off in medals.” The current session continues until March. In April and. May, Steinemann will be teaching a spring school in Fruitvale and then move on to Nelson for sum- mer training in July and August. While she won’t be spend- ing as much time on the ice, her day won’t necessarily become any shorter as she commutes from her - home in Blueberry. Steinemann closed out the ’ “interview by saying, “I want peo- ple to know that I like Castlegar and I am thrilled to be back in the Kootenay. I hope to be around for along time to come.” The Castlegar Sun would like to publish your wedding photos and story in our Bridal Showcase pages. SUN STAFF PHOTO / Frank Derby Frankly Speaking |. Frank Derby This is traditionally the time to reflect on the events of the past year and to look forward to the.coming year - the second part I can handle better than the first, but let’s give it a go on what little I know about the local-scene.....__ , me —_ __. Last, year the Castlegar. Rebels finished out of the playoffs in the, Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. Worse than that, they. almost folded with lack of fan support and cash flow problems. The Rebels’ executive did hang in though and a Bingo license-promises to help their financial situation if not their on ice performance. Don Joice was brought in as General Manager and has had his hands full trying to fill out a team that has had a nucleus of basically two lines for most of the season. z My prediction for the balance of the season, and this is from the guy who treads that fine line between optimist and fool, is that the Rebels will again miss out on post season action [see why in Beyond the Blue Line] but will be in good shape for next year. Look for improved performances from recent acquisitions Jeremy Thompson, Chad Riddel and Dean Graves. Keith Semenoff will start picking up points the way an AllStar should and Remi Lavallee will again get on track when he blasts his heavy shot from the point during power plays. Look for an ex-Rebel to come back and make a significant difference. In the NHL Edmonton won the Stanley Cup last year and Mark Messier stepped out of Gretzky’s shadow and got the credit he deserved, picking up MVP honors. In ‘91 I predict that Vancouver will not only make the playoffs, but will actually win more games than they lose during the regular season. Bolstered by this surge of confidence they will beat either Los Angeles or Edmonton before los- ing to eventual cup winners Calgary. Calgary has too much firepower to be denied again. i ing the San Francisco 49ers to 55-10 blow out over the Denver Bron- cos for the Super Bowl. If he’s healthy he'll do it again against any opposition. If he isn’t, look for another battle of the field goal kickers in another Super Hype Yawner. . In Boxing Mike Tyson-and the rest of the world were shocked when James [Buster] Douglas knocked him out in the tenth round in’ Tokyo. Iron Mike is back and'will get his Belts back in ‘91. Razor, Ruddock will last longer against Tyson than Douglas did against Evander Holyfield[3 rounds] when the Heavyweight Belts changed hands again. Holyfield and Tyson will be a good match if it happens this year - Holyfield will want to put that one off as long as possible. In Baseball, we had another shocker as the Cincinnati Reds swept the almighty Oaklarid A’s in the World Series. Toronto Blew Jays faded again, but I predict they won't have to worry about that.in ‘91 - they won’t even be close - the trades won't pay off. Montreal Expos will become Canada’s team again and they will do it with pitching - that is assuming that Quebec doesn’t separate and that the new owners, are wilting to pay for the/one or two free agents who will make 'the i . The only danger is from CRIMEFLASHBACK | ” fe ATTRA ti id | Although it was a dangerous game, it was like an elixir, Herbert William French was having an affair. Just imagine Herbie at 45, a +. rather dull bloke in a rather dull job having a bona fide clandestine _ affair, Sure he was married, like any God-fearing office manager.should be, but what-the heck, his new love put spring in Herbie’s gait and sparkle in his i Herbie and Eileen put their heads together and came up with a solu- tion, Herbie would pay for and Bileen would undergo an illegal abortion. To this end, Herbie made a few discreet inquiries, A friend of a friend gave him a phone number. That's how he met Doris Colbert. He and Mrs. Colbert came to an understanding that 40 pounds would sive eyes. sige It had started out innocently enough in good old London town — a bit of flirting with his secretary, attractive 28-year-old Eileen Taylor, a quiet lunch and a few drinks. Sometimes, after work, they would visit a pub, There was no question in Herbie’s mind. Eileen was as attracted to him as he was to her. : True, Eileen was married, but it was obvious to Herbie that she didn't get along with her husband. That made Herbie feel good, After all, he didn’t want to be the cause of breaking yp Eileen’s marriage. When she separated from her husband and took a small flat near Hampstead Heath, Herbie didn’t feel guilty at all. The natural progression of Herbie and Eileen’s relation. _ “ were at it all the time. In August 1955, Bileen checked and rechecked her calendar. Convinced that no lunar miscalculation had taken place, she was certain that she was pregnant. Her unplanned condi- tion posed a serious problem. Eileen had already left her hus- band, Unwed mothers were frowned upon in those days. She would have to leave her job and the income which provided her with the independence she treasured. Back in 1955 in England, abortions were illegal. Eileen decided to share her little secret with Herbie. There was an outside chance that he would leave his wife and obtain a divorce. Once Hileen’s divorce was final, the two lovers could marry and live happily ever after. Fat chance. Herbie didn’t take the news welll. He dreaded the thought of Bileen’s stomach expanding right there in the office for all the world to see. He could kiss his marriage goodbye. Working in the same office as Eileen would be out of the question. Then there was child support to consider. bea ry sum to do the job. _ Doris agreed to perform the oper- ation after being assured by Herbie that Eileen was no more than three months pregnant.. Somewhat relieved that things might turn out all right in the end, Herbie scam- pered off to tell Eileen the good news. She went along with all the arrangements. A few nights later, Eileen and Herbie showed up on schedule at a house on Bryanston Square. They were met by Doris Colbert and her assistants, Elizabeth Williams and Kathleen O'Regan. Eileen was ush- ered into a bedroom, while Herbie cooled his heels in the den. The operation was to be simple enough. using a Higginson syringe, a soapy mixture would be inserted into the patient's womb. The sac containing the fetus would separate from the wall of the womb. The procedure went well, but nothing happened, Eileen was made *'te'jump up and down and to take a walk around the block. re Several ideas were tossed about before they decided to bury, Bileen Epping Forest." '. With Herbie’s help, the three women managed to carry the body down to the back seat of Elizabeth Williams’ car. Bileen was propped up between Doris Colbert and Kathleen O'Regan in the back seat. Anyone who has driven through he streets of London with a dead body knows it is not a pleasant experi- ence. At last, they reached their des- tination, ¥ Herbie directed the women and their gruesome cargo about a half mile into the forest off Epping Road. There are not that many people with experience in grave digging, if you; discount those stout hearted men who perform this necessary task for a living. 3 Certainly, our ill equipped four- some found the task tedious, it was ' almost dawn when what passed for a grave was completed, Hileen was lowered into ber crude resting place and covered with earth. Then something happened which was unfortunate for Herbie. He bend over and out of his pocket tumbled a yellow pencil bearing his name and the name and address of his compa- ny. Unaware of this incriminating bit of evidence left only a few metres from the grave, the unholy foursome made their way back to Bryanston Square. They shook hands all around and called it a day. _ On Oct. 29, some three months after Eileen was unceremoniously buried, two youngsters walking’ in the woods saw a human hand stick- ing out of the earth. Police were quickly dispatched to the scene. it didn’t take long to establish that.the dead woman was Eileen Taylor, who had been reported missing dur- ing the early part of August. Bileen’s husband was tracked down. He proved that he had been separated from his wife for months before her estimated date of death, which had been established as being about three months before when was discovered. A post mortem indicated that death had been caused. by an attempted abortion. And then detectives found what all detectives dream about finding at the scene of a murder. Close by the body they came across a yellow pen- cil with the name Herbert William French printed above the address where our Herbie was employed. Initially, Herbie attempted to bluff his way out of his predicament brought about the desired result. Two days later, Eileen again sub- jected herself to the ordeal. This time, something went terribly wrong. Air was sucked up into the syringe with the soapy fluid and injected into the uterus. The result- ing embolism caused Eileen’s death in a matter of minutes. Naturally enough, Herbie was tesror stricken. he felt terrible about Bileen, but now he was faced with the of diting himself by disclaiming any with his missing secretary. When shown the incriminating pencil, he crum- bled and immediately named his three conspirators. When ques- tioned, they too admitted their part in Eileen's death. All four stood trial in London’s Old Bailey, Because of absence of malice aforethought, the murder charges were reduced to manslaugh- ter, Herbert French pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years from any blame in her death. The three abortionists were faced with the same problem. All four dis- Pp Colbert, O’Regan and Williams pleaded guilty to using an instrument with intent to procure an abortion, Each received a one- cussed their mutual predi year and i which could mitigate your interests, Be careful in signing bonds or con- tracts with others, as there could be some disagreement which will scon be disclosed. .
