Mix it up. Ferraro played hockey in the winter, and baseball in the sum- mer. His ball tearn made it to the little league World Series. Keeping up with their education is something else young athletes must do. It’s not easy getting to the big leagues, and the job market is tough enough with an educa- tion, never mind without. “There's a one per cent success ratio of players who make the NHL. In his house, there were rules about school. Ferraro couldn't play hockey if his school work fell behind. ‘It's Important to have fun at what you want to do. Don't play because you feel you have to play’ — RAY FERRARO New York Islander It's also important, Ferraro said, teer work in the area,” Gurney said. Ferraro is still excited about how much the community gets behind him in his career. “He's enthusiastic about what people in Trail did for him,” Gur- ney added. After eight years in the League, Ferraro has no plans for retirement just yet. But a few ideas are on the back-burner. “If you leave your planning to the first day of your retirement, you're too late. Once the glory is gone, you have to work hard and fast.” The two areas Ferraro is look- ing into are broadcasting and his parents family business in Trail. Every year he returns home for the summer. “My wife and I are from Trail, and there's no point in being any- where else.” Like all homes, Trail is where Ferraro’s family and friends are. It's a place you can kick back and be comfortable. “As soon as the season is over, it's time to come home. Eight months in New York is enough,” he added. Bob Gumey from Selkirk Col- lege, who is the organizer behind Ferraro’s talk this Saturday, said that Ferraro may be at home, but it's a working vacation. “He's always busy with volun- administrators, weight-lifters and body- After Ferraro’s talk, the Investors Group Community Sports Achievement Award will be given to the administrator in Castlegar sports who is usually the unsung hero.
