Wednesday, August 24, 1994 The Castlegar Sun The power of God and simple faith “Brothers and sisters, do not deceive yourselves. If you think you are wise in this age you should become fools so that you may become wise. For the wis- dom of the world is foolishness with God.”: Paul's First Epistle to the Corinthians - 3;18-23. Many years ago I saw a movie by the great Swedish movie director, Ingemar Bergman. It was called ‘The Seventh Seal’ and it was set in medieval Swe- den at the time of the Crusades. The cast of characters includ- ed: an idealistic knight on his way home after many years in the Holy Land, his pragmatic squire, a motley collection of prostitutes, merchants, cut-purs- ers, murderers, one unfortunate woman sentenced to be burned at the stake as a witch, a travelling @ YCI juggler or fool; his wife and child, and Death who has a final rendezvous with them all. The juggler is quickly identi- fied in the story ag God's Fool, pure in heart because he alone can see the Virgin Mary (dressed in traditional blue) and the as they walk in the moming woods, Because he is a good but simple man he stum- bles into various dangerous scrapes during the journey, but because he is under God's hand he always comes out unharmed. He makes his final escape fol- lowing a great thunderstorm he and his family stand by the cara- van in the early dawn at the edge of a great chasm and watches as Death, playing a pipe, prances along the distant horizon, while all his former companions dance Continued from 2B “Participating on a YCI pro- ject provides young Canadians with the chance to carn valuable experience, to gain new skills, to learn about a different cul- ture, and to meet other young people from around the world”, says Greg Smith, the Communi- cation Director of YCL The deadline for applications for the projects next spring and summer is October 7. To receive an application and more infor- mation about Youth Challenge International contact the Youth Challenge International office at 1-800-979-INFO from any- where in B.C. disconsolately in a conga-line behind him. It was in fact an alle- Oe se Wa edie abaad gorical tale, full of sy told and enjoyed at several levels. & Recollections John Charters Very recently I saw another but modern allegorical tale about God's Fool at the Castle Theatre. It was titled (somewhat deceptive- ly), “The World as Seen by For- rest Gump.” Perhaps the name ‘Gump’ threw me initially for it recalled a long ago chinless car- toon character called Andy @ poor, fatherk Alabama boy who can walk only with the aid of steel leg braces and has an 1.Q. of 75. He has just two friends - his devout but deter- mined mother who insists that he never lose sight of his own worth, and the sexually abused small daughter of a drunken share cropper. Like the juggler, he gets into all sorts of difficulties, particular- ly with the local bullies. But at the urging of his girl friend he quickly learns that sometimes one has to run away from evil. In doing so he discovers that he can run like the wind. Because he is God's Fool Hair Care & More. . FEATURING exhibition of prints in various the | the quetry by! Jeff Adshead from Vancouver. I really can’t imagine taking a holiday any other way. The possibilities of tours, exotic cruises, shopping tours or entertainment packages just doesn’t interest me. Nor can I imagine taking my holiday at any time other than the summer. I am sure this is all because of my childhood experiences. Next to Chri holid: highlight of my year.
