Noverry.—A surface crosscnt has been made upon the recent strike of this property, and the work is now in about 8 feet on the ledge. Recent as- says show an averagé value of $22 in silver and ¢2 in gold, which is consid- ered an excellent showing for the sur- face. The entire force is now employed upon the new strike, and important re- sulta are expected to develop from the new find, Work is suspended elsewhere on the claim owing to the demand for all hands at the late discovery. The future of the Novelty looks bright in- deed. Bh Inon Horsz.—There is no develop- ment work going on at the mine at pre- sent. Healy Describes His Experi- ence in Bloody Cuba, THE MINER MISQUOTED HIM Graphic Account of the Assault on ‘the Spanish Trenches. Francis W. Healy a full fledged hero of the Spanish-American war is in the city on a visit to his brother, Stanly Healy, When seen by.a reeord repre- sentative, Mr. Healy related in a most unasuming manner some of his experi- ences during the Cuban campaign. He wasin San Franciseo when the .war broke out, and enlisted in troop “Ir” 8rd cavalry of regular U. S.A. and was ordered to the front at once, where he served with honor and credit all through the campaign, baving the distinction of S| being in the’ van guard in the flercest fighting of the war, and was among the first men to step over the Spanish trenches in the asault upon Sau Juan, _Mr. Healy speaks in highest terms of the bravery of those American officials with whom he came in contact, notably Gens. wheeler, Chaffee, Lawton, Cap- ron, Sumner and Orde, and is very in- dignant and expressed himzelf strongly against the misstatments which recently appeared in the Miner, wherein he is quoted as accusing General Shatter of cowardice. He says the statement is absolutely incorrect and docs him a great injustice. Any reasonable min- ded man knows that a commanding general is eel.om if ever expected on the Hreing line. Under the circumstances General Shafter did all in his power to carry out the campaign auccesefully, supplies were plentiful on board trans- portsand at Baquira, but the fighting commenced at once upon the landing and was pushed to a finish so fast that simply the actual necessities were brought forward to the front. The Cubans stole many rations n ar the front but no one went hungry, to his knowledge,.and the successful ending shows how the men and officers got along. OF course, fever has played havoc since Lut he knows nothing about that, as he has been on a furlough ever since the surre:der. Mr. Healy has no love for the Cubans, and says they aren worthless lot, but be says the sympathy of the American troops went out to the Spanish, who fonght bravely, while half starved to death. Mr. Healy was pres- ent at the srurender of Santiago, when Spanieh arms were given up, also shook hands with Lieutenant Hobeon and his companions when they came into the Hiatroop was within 100 yards of General Grimes battery on the morning of July let, when the San Juan battle was fought, and he saw many Cubang pposite the Bank of Montreal, THE DRUGGISTS ‘| Patrol,” “Held by the Enemy,” and! hind Grimes battery. Spanish battery fire was very accurate but their rifleaim was to high. Mr. Healy took the fover on July 26 andon August 8 was removed to the United States. He is entirely recovered now, and will goon join his company, which is at Fort Ethan Allen,. ‘Vermont, and bas been ordered to Havana, to- gether with the 2nd cavalry. He gays Richard Harding Davis, gives the best account of the batile of San Juan, and Capt Lee, British Millitary attache to U.S. the beat on battleof El Caney, and Fredrick Remington, the best sketch artist. They were together side by side in the same trench, and talked con- siderable before the battle of San Juan. in fact is anxious to go back and try it over again. THEATRE TONIGHT. Tho Bittner Company Opens With the ‘“‘Gal- ley Slave.”” Manager Allen A. White of the Ross- land opera house is to be congratulated upon securing so excellent a troupe as asthe Bittner Theatre Company. He has given a large guarantee to this com- pany and the theater-going people of Rossland should show their apprecia- tion, Mr. White has also gone to con- siderable expense in fixing up the thea- tre and providing five stoves, which asa yuaranted that the building will be com- fortable. . W.H. Bittner, the manager of the company hus had 16 years experience in the buginees, and is supported by a atrong company, and hag been identified with such plays as Edwin Milton Roy- al’s “Friends,” “The White Squadron,” “Land of the Midnight Sun, “The Fire “Shenandoah.”” John Waldron, the leading man, isa graduate of the English stock theatres, and for several seasons appeared in tha support of Henry Irving. Edward B. Mr. Healy seems perfectly willing, and | POLTIGAL SPEGULATIONS. Thompson, Clute, Goodeve, Lalonde and Mackintosh ARE TALKED OF FOR MAYOR. Ritchie, MeKane, McPherson, Stack and Walker for the Council. Contrary to the wishes of some of the politicians, the city campaign is well opened up. Ross Thompson may be regarded as fully in the field for mayor. Mayor Wallace is credited with saying that he could be re-elected with hands down, which if trae may well be inter- preted as an announcement that he ig in the race, Alderman A. S, Goodeve is often and favorably mentioned in con- nection with that office, and would make a strong candidate, but as he has signed 4 petition asking Mr. Thompson tv come out, he may be regarded asoutof the fleld, at least while Mr.’ Thompson is a candidate. Jt has been thought by many that Alderman C. O. Lalonde waa an aspirant, but since he has signed Mr. Thompson’s requisition, the opinion of the general public has changed. ‘Those who ‘know Mr. Lalonde best say he is “chock fall” of holding office, and will not consent to run for mayor or re-elec- tion to the council. So far there have been no other names mentioned in con+ nection with the office of mayor, save possibly the Hon. C.H. Mackintosh who was brought out for Rossland’a first mayor, but was found not eligible, Mr. Mackintosh’s mining business would no Kelly, -another- of the company, hag been scen in important parts in A..M. The Slee & Salesman’s union has ining the rig: of all the business houses bu. cio, to the agreement to close at 7 o’clock in the doubt preclude him undertaking the du- ties of the office. It issure that he would not make a fight for it. It would have to come by acclamation or not at all. The fight for aldermen is not so well defined. It has not been ascer- tained how many of the present. incum- bents will aspire to re-election, John Edgren says he would under no. cireum- stances have the office again. We have gotten a little ahead in our story, and say something about Alder- man John 8. Clute, Jr., for mayor, Some of the “knowing enes” says he is the Miner’s candidate. However, that isto be doubted ‘unless Mr. Wallace should not stand for re-election. It is not thought that Mr. Clute and Mr, Thompson Will both be candidates, as their strength lies more or less in the same quarter. The dear people will not probably know whether or not Mr. Clute will be a candidate for re-election to th: council until the entries formayor have been decided upon. Mr. Goodeve could no doubt be re-elected, ashe has made a good alderman. Albert Barrett is so closely occupied with his. private evening » the day proceeding holidays and the week be- fore Christinas. The good citizens of Rossland will no doubt adjust them- selves to-the new arrangement and do their marketing before 7 without com- plaint. This evening is the first inaug- uration, go all should remember it. VOTERS SHOULD TAKE NOTICE. John McLaren of the Brunswick hotel has been mentioned favorably for alderman forthe Second ward, while the many friends of John McKane insist that he standin that ward too. Mr. MeKane and Mr. Me- Laren are bott public spirited men and would make good councilmen. James Walker ef the War Engle hotel has lots of friends and would make a good official if he could be induced to run, but that is not probable. Thomas Stack, of Stack & McDonnell, is often mentioned for alderman in his ward, Mr. Stack was defeated two years ago by afew votes, but it was his own fault, as he took no interest in the elec— tion.
