They Were most welcome and it is hoped that they enjoyed the tasty home cpoking served by the senior ladies. Ed had to pay for his sup- per by talking afterwards to the assembled members and answering numerous questions from his audi- ence. He did that quite capably. He spoke at length on matters of concer to the seniors, advising them of the proper channels-to use to contact the government bureaucracy. 15% (Mark your Calendar... ) Thursday, April 27 is Senior's Day at Pharmasave You can save 15% on most everything you need! 1 "(Except prescription disper SENIOR'S DAY PRESENT YOU PHARMACARE CARD AND SAVEII OFF *MOST EVERYTHING PS PHARMASAVE 1128 - 3rd St. (Downtown) Castiegr 365-7813 WE’RE ASKING A LOT OF YOU. He expressed his sym- pathy for the aspirations of the oldtimers to be able to move into a better hall, since this aging building was become unfit for its role of host- ing the old people. The day was Ed’s and Katrina’s anniversary. It was a heart warming scene when Ed, in front of all of the diners, presented his wife with a beautiful arrangement of flowers. In his talk Mr. Conroy spoke of his wifes desire to have to have centre set up in the area, which would serve as a meeting place and recreation cen- tre for the young people of the neighbourhood. His listeners were in full sympathy Ed concluded | his remarks by referring to the rapid growth in the population of this area. and to the long term bene- fits of the full develop- ment of the Waneta and Keenleyside Dams. The supper ended with everyone commenting ‘on the excellence of their meal and their pleasure at Mr. and Mrs. Conroy's company. Steak Neptune at JEART The BRAGBOX Want to show off your grandkids? Next to accidents involv- ing motor vehicles, the greatest number of fatal accidents in Canada each year occur in the home. While being alert to pos- sible hazards is important for all age groups, taking special precautions is criti- cal for people over 65 Although seniors make up only 10 per cent of the population in Canada, they account for 30 per cent of all accidental fatalities and 25 per cent of all accidental injuries. Thoughts on Various Subjects T have just received a letter from Father B, of We Abbey. Very quickly the world con- verges and shrinks around the observer and the observed. The latter becomes a giant-——passive, He is a man of vision and for an Of one such small experience he records in his neat, precise hand: “Only a brown and black speck hooded and oval, shining and moving so small against my black habit (priestly robe). How did it get there, alone at the beginning of vigils (evening prayer)?... Alone it travels on hidden feet up on the book of psalmody (hymns)... patrolling the white pages and then off to edge of black, the endless plain and seeming The wonder of one small crea- ture, Lord, A lady bug.” Father B, a sensitive man, was brought up on a farm and, like many country-bred fold, has in instinctive feel for the complex relationships which exist both between living things and between living and non-living things—an instinct which is too often dulled by life in the city. I, too, was brought up in a rural environment and many an hour I have sat intently watching an ant colony. It always fascinated me and is a reminder that bigness is not necessarily the key to power. In any case, I have never destroyed an ant’s nest unless its inhabitants invaded my personal turf and, despite my membership in the One per cent of the world’s largest creature, I share Dr. Albert Schweitzer'’s philosophy of respect for life, all life. Another early lesson is also akin to Gulliver's Travels where he visits the. Kingdom of the Brobdingnagians, the land of the giants Because of our relatively large size, we rarely meet creatures larger than ourselves, particularly when d, and so we have ing nothing. One recalls Swift's satirical story, Gulliver's Travels to the Kingdom of Lilliput, in which tiny inhabitants are the height of Gulliver's thumb and are ruled by a king who is “taller than most by the breadth of my nail than any of his court which alone is enough to strike awe into the beholders.” The picture in my child's story book of Gulliver’s Travels is still sharp in my mind. an exaggerated impression of our own importance In my case the Brobdingna- gians were the Orcas, the then much feared killer whales. When I was a youngster I would watch them, every so often, shining black and white, swimming and cavorting up the waters of Burrard Inlet. They didn’t look too dangerous at a kilometre distance. However, one day I was out on the water in a small rowboat, The water was an endless sheen and the mountains thrust up almost vertically from its edge with scarcely a ripple. Abruptly, between me and the grey cliffs, a scimitar-shaped black fin that was taller than my boat was long, broke through the water some 30 metres away, cutting it like ahuge knife. I panicked. There is a big difference between 30 and 1,000 metres and I started pulling for the distant shore. Then another equally tall black fin broke through on’ that side but closer, while a third, still closer, slid in astern. In that moment I was an instant bug on a pond of hungry trout, expecting at any moment to be tossed into the water and devoured. In the midst of all this panic, suddenly the sea was as empty as before. Totally harmless, except to the seals or salmon they were search- ing for, the Orcas had checked me out and left for more impor- tant matters, leaving me shaken and with a new perspective of my place in the scheme of things. A sense of total helplessness is not an entirely negative experi- ence. We need it once in a while to make us humble. The largest oxymoron of this Alice-in- Wonderland age of ours is the constant clamor for classes in self-esteem when what we need more than anything are classes in the disciplines of logic and the exercise of our most pre- cious gift: imagination, the ability to visualize, to see things which are invisible, beyond sight and experience. Alice’s White Queen recom- mended, if I recall, imagining a half-_, dozen impossible things every day Meanwhile, I am still struggling with a recent statement by physi cist Steven Hawking that the so- called continuities which make up the interior of the mysterious black holes in space are so dense that one particle the size of a proton has the mass of a mountain.
