Selkirk College Vocational | Division in Nelson will spon sor an i One-week course teaches How to cut your own lumber but go away able to build their own chainsaw mill and chainsaw lumber-making course by its inventor Will Malloff, beginning this Sun- day. Chainsaw lumber-making is a unique process allowing one person to fell a tree and | produce precision-cut lumber on the spot by use of a modified chainsaw. Sunday's session will fea- ture a demonstration by Malloff. Monday . through Friday, classes will run from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. and will provide instruction in how to build a chainsaw mill from over-the- counter parts, chainsaw mill- ing procedures, safety and maintenance, chain modific- ation from a standard cross- cut chisel chain and the building of accessories. Saturday and Sunday will be used for actual on-site milling. Registration fee for the Sunday-to-Sunday course is $100 per student and class size is limited to 16 students. A native British Colum- bian, Malloff is the author of Chainsaw Lumber-making, to it their own lum- ber. “The size and nature of the nena allows the individual to process lumber and pre- serve the land, rather than being at the mercy of big logging .companies’ high ‘prices and destructive log- ging practices,” he said. “A lot of people are moving onto a few acres and would like to cut their own lumber for their own uses. This sys- be published in the Spring by Tauton Press. Malloff designed his sys- tem in the early 1960's, but recently perfected it with a revolutionary new ripping chain that can be made by simple modification of the regular 9 “It has taken me 20 years is a course in economics and ecology. With the system, one per- son can precision-cut from 800 to 1000 feet per eight- hour day, depending on tim- ber conditions. “The system is labor-in- tensive, rather than machine- intensive, " said Malloff. “It allows use of only mature timber and no heavy equip- ment is used. That prevents the erosion problem caused by going in with big machines and dragging the trees out.” Selective cutting occurs and the timber is cut on the spot. The lumber comes out of the bush in board form. Malloff has held courses across North America and teaches in the Woodworking West Symposium at Brigham Young University. According to Malloff, most of his stu- dents are new to the field, Loophole chewed thru tobacco law NASHVILLE, TENN. (AP) — Three times since 1919 the state legislature has written and rewritten a ban on the sale of tobacco products to minors. And it still isn’t up to snuff. The legislature back then outlawed ths sale of all to- bacco products to people un- der 21, and the law was amended to age 18 in 1974. It also later was rewritten' to stop the sale of marijuana paraphrenalia to minors. State Senator Tommy Burks, a tobacco farmer, asked Tennessee Attorney- General William Leech for a ruling, and Leech said re- cently that the law had a loophole chewed through it. Leech said the amended law ‘does not prohibit the dissemination of non-smoking tobacco to minors . . . Snuff, chewing tobacco and other non-smoking tobacco prod- ucts are not in this act.” The newest version, passed this year, calls for'a $500 fine and up to six months in jail for anyone tem makes it both possible and practical.” :*“It is also good for scul- ptors, furniture and boat builders,” Malloff added. Cuts can be as large or small as required and naturally curved and angled wood can be ‘used, rather than the usual joining process nec- essary for regular boards. Malloff has instructed sem- inars for B.C.’s coastal In- dians, showing them how to realistically meet their own lumber needs. “The system is in demand in third-world countries, where costs prohibit large- scale milling,” Maloff ex- plained. Some more recent inter- ested clients include China, {Fiji, New Zealand and Aus- tralia. Malloff estimates the cost of a “first-class” production unit at about $1,600, but quickly adds that smaller cutting can be done with a smaller engine, and the more powerful engine is $900 of that cost.
