Playing’ in Rossland on Friday, Trail eventually won the match 5-4 in overtime, but ; the outcome was in doubt until the very end. The Jr. Smokies had to- overcome a 3-0 first-period deficit to pull out the win. Both clubs were evenly matched and went all-out in a hard-hitting, fast-moving game that had approximately 900 fans holding on to their seats, The Rebels took charge early in the game, scoring two power-play goals as well as one short-handed marker to jump : toa 3.0 lead after 20 minutes. Steve Bozek opened the ‘ scoring at 4:33 when he de- ‘ flected Brune Tassone's slap- “shot from the point past a sercened Steve Handley. Brian Verigin blasted a slapshot into the net just 32 seconds later, with Bozek drawing the assist. Both of those markers were power-play efforts, Castlegar's third goal of the period came at 15:50 as Trail had the man advantage. It looked like a nearly impossible task for the Jr. Smokies to get back into con- tention, but they didn't let up for one minute and scored three unanswered goals in the second frame to knot the count. It was but a question of time as to when Trail would hit the scoreboard and they ap- plied tremendous pressure early in the period. Gary Baines finally broke the ice at 5:35 when he deflect- ed a shot by Terry ‘Thomas past Chris Vlanich and John Mondin pulled the Jr. Smokies to within one goal just 58 seconds later with a shot directly from a face-off. Excellent second effort on _ the part of Thomas was respon- sible for the tying marker. With Trail players swarming around the Rebels’ net, Thomas cleared the puck to Bob Lunde waiting at the blue line. The pass came as Thomas was falling lo the ice, but it reached Lunde, who fired it into the net to even the score at 3-3, Barry Zanier put the Jr. Smokies into the lead at 4:01 of the third period when he stole the puck-while his team was short-handed, raced down the ice alone and beat Vianich with his shot. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Rebels replied one minute and 31 seconds later on a defensive Inpse by the Smokies.
