The Recorn is betraying no confidence when it takes the liberty of setting the mine owners and the’ uneasy press of this province at rest regarding the de- termination of the miners to insiet npon the enforcement of the eight-hoor law. They would be foolish and weak-kneed to recede from the position they have taken after going to the trouble and ex- pense of securing the passage of the bil! which they believe just and right. Those opposing the law had as well make up their minds.to obey it, and the sooner the government puts itin force all over the province the ‘better for all concerned. ‘We would like to ask where the city ia to get off at if the first cost of 8 water- works system is to be $135,258.05, which does not include a lighting plant. It ie understood that the city council: would not entertain the proposition to buy the waterworks plant of the Water & Light Company because they wanted toown the lighting plant too. Even if they raise the $160,000 and the waterworks system should cost no more than esti- mated there would be lett only $14- 741.95. It will never do. The city is getting into a jack-pot that it cannot win. recent eatts ~The people will not look favorably up- ‘on, the. proposition of the Rossland Water & Light company te improve their plant in consideration of a 12 years franchise, The consumer dé- mandse reduction in the water and light tolls, which, it appears, can only be secured through municipal owner- sbip. It is better late than never, but there was no just reason why the matter should have been so long de- layed. A New Fuel Better Than. Coal. Anewly discovered mineral which ie of s,lustrous black.color, and, which a8 a fuel surpagees.coal and all other sub- atances heretofore known, is described by the Journal of Geology. It ia found on the Island of Barbadoes, in the Leu- ser Autilles, where the natives call it “manjak.”” Tt is thought that manjak is petrified ened for six months. They destroy the value of the clothing on the dead ani hack the coffin Leforé burial. This is done that there may be nothing in the grave worth theiving.
