Mackin- tosh and Dr. Bowes last night, Mr. Smith Curtis proved that his claim to the title of ‘plain, blunt man” was ill-founded. By his tricky evasions and misrepresentations, he proved himself to be a politician full of guile. He slurred over the fact that, when his own chief, Mr. Mar- tin, was wavering as to whether he should enforce.the eight-hour law, Gov. Mackintosh pointed out the path of duty to him. The governor, as a law-abiding citizen, insisted that the law should be enforced, though it should be to his own loss, while Mr, Martin, as a_ shifty poli- tician, dreaded to do his duty. Mr: Curtis, with an air of lofty self-denial, told his audience that he did not ask their votes as a reward for his part in bringing about the labor settlement, though he ;had been careful to bring out in strong relief all he had done in that mat- ter. The. fact is, that: Mr. Cur- tis had been vainly striving for a week to bring together the two par- ties to the dispute and was forced to appeal to Ralph Smith, a mem- ber of another party,- to.do the work. , After Mr. Martin, by taking the leading. part in smuggling the law throigh the legislature, had precipitated the difficulty, it .be- came a matter of self-preservation | to bring about a-settlement. But Mr. Curtis, as his emissary, was unable to accomplish anything and, in, his dire necessity, called in :a political opponent. It speaks all the more for Mr. Ralph . Smith's BLUNT MAN.: hed’ and not killed thé «pro- | posal.” ey Somebody will have -to- pay~ for any damage that may be done.
