In simple terms, the Minx is a video computer terminal and document transmitter in one package. 2 USES CAMERA A high-resolution color TV camera peers ont at the user from the ‘sight side, 8 picture to one or more Minxes in the same building or across the country. . A Minx user can dial another terminal and carry on a televised conversation. The external camera can be used to show documents or plans and can pivot to scan things such as machinery in need of repair, says Amodeo. The is to data. Datapoint has been testing and selling the Minx for five years, So far, the buyers have been large corpora- tions who want to link branch offices. Olympia and York of-Toronto has linked its New York operation with its head office, and the federal Department of Trade has a line between Ottawa and Montreal. Bell Canada Ltd. bought six Minx terminals to develop its video-conferencing business. ° “They can see they can sell more circuits with these things,” said Amodeo. In California, Minx terminals are being used in the court system, allowing juveniles to testify in family court proceedings without entering the intimidating atmos- phere of the courtroom. They're also used to put judges in touch with prisoners for routine hearings. Videophones aren't really new. SERVICE FAILED American Telephone and Telegraph marketed a consumer-oriented service a few years ago but it failed because of the high cost and low customer response to the system's poor black and white picture quality. The main attraction now is the video conference business, where executives at two locations talk to each other from telephone company studios. The cost is high — $1,300 an hour for a video conferérice between Vancouver and Toronto — but less than sending one group to the meeting in person. Datapoint’s Minx does the same job but eliminates the phone company middleman, linking offices directly by closed-circuit cable. At $15,000 for each terminal, plus itchi: gear and ission costs, only large-scale users can justify it, said Amodeo. Two developments could open up the market in just a few years, Amodeo believes. Lower-cost termindls would make the Minx and its future itors ible to smaller i Datapoint, for instance, is exploring production of circuit boards in China in a joint venture with the Chinese government. The key to success is in upgrading telephone lines to handle the signal. APPROVED BAND The U.S. Federal Communications Commission has approved the necessary band width for public telephone use in the United States and Amodeo said the Canadian oak ision and T scat C ai should issue its approval next year. The RRSP option was more complicated under the old rules because the money was technically “locked in.” If the taxpayer wanted some of the money to supplement his income, he had to transfer funds to a new RRSP and then: de-register one of the plans. This procedure is no longer necessary under the new rules, although you still have to pay tax on money you take out. Delaney warns, however, that while federal law now allows withdrawls from RRSPs, the company managing the plan may not — and almost certainly won't if the money is in a fixed-term deposit like a five-year guaranteed investment certificate. Delaney says that older people should re-evaluate their RRSPs. He suggest those at or near retirement should view the raging-bull ‘equity market with a healthy skepticism and consider a safer guaranteed instrument, even though interest rates are relatively low. “If the stock market plummets — which is a virtual certainty at some future date — a retired person could see the value of his holdings decline by as much as 30 per cent over a period of months,” he said.
