BOSTON (AP) Youngsters who
once received radiation to treat
ringworm of the scalp face eight
times the usual risk of rare nerve
tumors of the head and neck, a new
study shows.

The once-common treatment has
been largely out of favor since the
1950s and has been replaced with
drug therapy. Before the era of
antibiotics and other drugs, radiation
was used to treat many minor
afflictions, including acne and en-
larged tonsils.

“Now, many years later, we are
finding out that there were hazards
linked with this treatment,” said Dr.
John Boice, a co-author of the study
at the National Cancer Institute.

The study, published today in the
New England Journal of Medicine,
was conducted in Israel on 10,834
children who received radiation for
ringworm between 1948 and 1960.

The researchers found that 60 of
these people have developed tumors
of nerve tissue, compared with eight
among a comparison group. They had
seven times the usual risk of all
tumors and eight times the typical
risk of nerve tumors of the head and
neck
