MINES THAT ARE DEEP. Valuable Deposits of Mineral 2000 Feet Under Ground. Deep mining has always been a prob- lem of interest to mining men. There has always been speculation regarding the maximum depth at which practical mining can be carried on successfully. Scientists have written volumns upon the subject and their ideas have changed as frequently as the theories of pros- pectors. How deep do the veins of mineral extend below the ‘surface of the earth 18 a thing that thousands of min era have tried to find out, some ona small scale of the gopher hole calibre and others on more gigantic proportions. The quality and extent of the ore bodies in Rossland camp have been of such a gratifiying nature that experts have ad- vised deep mining as the everlasting test, the best assay that a mine can give. The Le Roiias not a deep mine, compsred with the ancient workings in other camps, but it is becoming more |. valuable with every fuot drilled toward the center of this planet. + DEEP CALIFORNIA MINES. High-grade ore is now mined in_ the 3 Maryland mine, Grass .Valley district, Cal., on the same. aap ies at a verticle depth of 1,500 feet. A small ore shoot was found at a de pih of 2,200 feet near f the Idaho shaft. sbaf tance 3,500 feet within which there is no evi- dence of any ual chnnge in the character or quality of the ore. WILL DEEPER MINING PAY? The question will naturally arise as to whether, with increased depth and cost of ‘mining, it will be a good ‘venture to carry on the nécessary dead work. This will have to be decided by the record of ten mine and the character of the fis- en This ett Professor Heim, for instance, places at 16,000 feet, while Professor Van Hiee, his consideration on the strength of rocks, arrives at t as the maximum limit for har! rocks in which of these estimates far exceeds the depth of practical mining.
