burgh, Pa.

With the right ‘sealant,

How To Avoid Scald Burns

It takes only three sec-
onds for a child to get a
third-degree burn from
water that is 140 degrees
Fahrenheit, a standard
household setting for hot
water. It’s a very common
childhood injury, according
to the National SAFE
KIDS Campaign (a group
that educated parents and
caregivers about pre-
ventable childhood injury).
Each year more than
37,000 kids in the United
States are treated for scald
burns from hot tap water,
liquids and foods.

Many of these injuries
can be prevented by the
simple installation of pres-
sure balance valves. Avail-
able through such leading
plumbing products manu-
facturers as Peerless Faucet
Company, pressure balance
valves help prevent scalds
by regulating water pres-
sure to maintain a consis-
tent water temperature,
degpite fluctuations in supe
ply: lines.

codes that require such
devices in new and remod-

child during bath time,
