After that it was down to hockey. Beaver Valley has heard all the rumors of Castlegar’s rise in the hockey world and they looked to prove their own prowess early on. Rebel forward Jason -Zupp took a toughing penalty just 44 seconds into the game and Beaver Valley capitalized as Greg Harrison slipped the puck past Mike Kooznetsoff. The Rebels responded at the 9:38 mark as Chad Stadnicky centred the puck from behind the Beaver Valley net to Dean Milford who made no mistake putting it high on the Nite Hawk goalie. The Hawks responded two minutes later when Aaron Weishaupt banged one by Kooznetsoff, but that was the last time the puck would get behind the Rebels returning all- Star goaltender. Rebel owner Bryan Bucci hands over a $30,000 cheque to RMJHL commissioner John Horvath during pre-game ceremonies Friday night. A second period goal by Stad- nicky tied the score. Then Brad Boyden picked up a short-handed goal at the start of the third peri- od to take the lead. Darren Belanger and Denis Nolette added goals to make the final 5-2. Stadnicky, Boyden, Milford and Belanger all had two points each on the night. It was a beneficial outcome considering the team looked extremely nervous early on. The Nite Hawks outshot the Rebels 36- 32 and the biggest reason for the win was the play of Kooznetsoff. “Absolutely,” said Rebels head coach Pat Price. “He held us in there. And that’s why he’s an all- Star goalie. We expect him to play like that every night.” The other story in the game was penalty minutes. The Rebels racked up 86 penalty minutes while the Hawks topped the cen- tury mark with 108. That included four fights that saw four Rebels, Casey Grant, Jason White, Denis Nolette and Chad Stadnicky all ejected from the game. Price wasn't overly concerned with the penalties and contends that his club will maintain strong discipline this season. But, like everything else, it will take some time for a lot of players to get used to the KIJHL style of play. Kevin MacGillvray knows the KUHL style of play and is enter- ing his second season in the league. He was named team cap- tain before the game and likes the look of this year's edition of the Castlegar Rebels. “We have a bit more size this year and with the mix of old guys and the new we're going to win a lot more hockey games,” said MacGillvray. The Rebels next test comes this Friday against Spokane fol- lowed by a re-match with Ross- THANK YOU ... Spokane beat the Rebels 8-2 in exhibition play but Price thinks it will be a different story this time around. “That was our first exhibition game,” said Price, “This team will not be beaten by another hockey team. This team will beat itself. “I'm not cgncerned about Spokane. I’m thinking about our team right now.” Castlegar’s first four games of the season are at home and Price thinks it gives the Rebels a defi- nite ad “It does,” said Price. “It gives us home ice advantage but it also lets us sleep in our own beds and work on our systems. I'd say you'll see a drastically different team out there after the home stand than you've seen tonight [Friday].” Game times for both games is 8 p.m. Rebel Rousings: The Rebels made nine cuts after the home opener and are now down to 24 players on the carded roster (seven defence, two goalies and 15 forwards). Each team is allowed to catry 25 carded play- ers up until the December Ist deadline when they must cut down to 21. General manager Bryan Bucci expects to make at least a few more changes before then as players come into town. One of the biggest additions to the team over the last week is defenseman Mike Knecazek Knecazek went to camp with the Creston Valley Thunder of the RMJHL and reported to the Rebels late last week. Despite losing most of the season to injury last year, the big defense- man played an important role in the Rebels drive to the league championship last year. September 27, 1995 Ann Landers Syndicated Columnist Dear Ann Landers: | am writing to you for advice because there is no one I can talk to about this. My 15-year-old daughter ran away from home in January. I had no idea “Claire” was unhap- py before she left a note saying she “just couldn’t take it anymore.” I never laid a hand on her or abused her in any way. There was a time when Claire was charged with conspiracy to murder me. The charges were dropped because of insuf- ficient evidence. When I later talked to her, she said she was never really going to do it. Now Claire wants to come home to visit, not so she can patch things up with me, but because she really wants to see her sister. She said she misses her a lot. They were extremely close. Claire definitely isn’t the same.sweet girl she used to be before she turned violent and strange. My question is this: Should I purchase the plane ticket for her to come? ] teatize you have thousands of Fetters to read, but I really need help. — P.D.Q Dear P.D.Q.: If you want to treat Claire to an airline ticket, OK, but please arrange for her to stay in a motel. And tell her up front your “treat” is for a three-day visit. Under no- circum- stances should you allow Claire to come see you unless someone else*is present, nor should you permit your other daugh- ter to bé alone with her. Not only. is Claire “vio- lent and strange” (your words), but she could be dangerous. I do hope the girl will get some psychi- atric treatment. CLUES ACROSS 1. Grass genus 4.
