oe PEST-FREE GARDENING . . ‘tet . Costlegar resident Elsie Nevakshonoft's garden, free from pests, flourishes under hot July sun. Control garden pests Attention home gardeners! So, you've joined the ecology movement and disposed of all those insecticides, herbicides and other horrible weapons of chemical warfare designed for use in your garden. And now your garden is a mess, sanctuary to aphids, caterpillars, slugs, beetles and spittlebugs and a botanical haven for black spot, leaf cur! and leaf rust. So-much for peaceful co-existente. Well take heart. Pestologists with the department of biological sciences at Simon Fraser University say there are ways of controlling pests that don't involve poisoning the world. Nor do you have to invest in ultra-sound equipment or import a swarm of exotic parasites. In fact, you probably have most of the required ingredients and materials in your home: beer, wood ash, soap, icing sugar and orange peels to name but a few The following ideas were obtained from several SFU scientists, all of whom stress that the methods cannot be guaranteed and that they are not endorsed by SFU's pestology centre. On the other hand, the researchers say they seem to work r bly well with rep Derris: powder from the roots and stems of leguminous shrubs. Dust plants against beetles and caterpillars. Seapy water: Use Soap flakes, not detergeft. Try your laundry water as a spray against aphids. Apparently the trick is to repeat frequently. Water: Use a strong spray, the pests drown or are dislodged. Aphids, ecodling moth, mealy bugs Epsom salt spray: 2 oz. salt to 2 gallons water. Try against black spot, mildew, wilt and rust. Wood ash: Spread around base of plants or dust over plants. Cutworm, flea beetles, wireworms and spittlebugs Project to help women travellers VICTORIA (CP}— Women the safety of their-guests. travelling alone have become the object of a project to promote their safety by a group of university students this summer. The Victoria Women's Sex ual Assault Centre is spon- soring the project, which is being funded by a federal government grant of $10,520. “Our first objective is to publish a pamphlet outlining ways in which women can in crease their personal safety when travelling,” said Grace Bogaert, one of the three University of Victoria stu dents hired for the project. “Our second goal is to rec ommend to hotel and motel owners ways of improving “We're looking for women who can tell us their exper iences as travellers and, per. haps, give us ideas on how some of the potentially haz- ardous conditions can be either improved or elimin ated. “For example, some hotels ask their guests to leave a copy of their hotel regis tration form in their cars where they can be seen when the cars are parked in the hotel's parking lot. “Such forms have the guest's name. the room num ber and other infermation which should not be dis played in public.” STRA ERRIES You Pick or Buy Picked G & L FARMS Grand Forks Open Every Day Dawn to Dusk No Appointment Necessary You Pick 75*Ib. — Picked $1 Ib, Bring Your Own Containers TURN LEFT ON 19th ST. Slugs will die happy Rhubarb leaves: Boil 3 lbs. leaves in 3 quarts water. Strain, add 1 6z. soap flakes dissolved in 1 quart water. Spray for aphids. Nicotine: Steep tobacco (cigarette or cigar butts or pipe ends will do) in hot water. Dilute this brew further, add soap and spray on roses. Use against spittlebugs, aphids, leaf. eating and sucking insects. Pepper: Hot peppers or cayenne pepper in water. Spray when plants are wet with mildew to combat red spider. Also sprinkle pepper powder lightly over flowers to discourage cats. Bordeaux mixture: Can be purchased ready-mixed. Use agains black spot, mildew and rust. Borax and icing sugar: Mix together in equal parts, sprinkle on ground or rocks for ants and other rockery pests. Borax: Sprinkle over weeds on paths or in driveways. African marigolds: Enjoy these plants while they rid roses, tomatoes or potatoes of nematodes. Grapefruit or orange skins: Bury skins beneath peach tree in winter or early spring to rid leaf curl. Leave on surface or on top of garden stakes to entice earwigs and slugs Dusting powder or tale: Can be dusted on plants (clogs insect breathing holes). Do not use flour. Pest traps: Corrugated carboard. Ants and earwigs congregate in shelter and can be easily eliminated. Also try cans baited with sugar water. Tacky bands: Paper smeared with tacky substance wrapped around tree will trap ants and other crawling insects. Seot: Mix fresh and weathered soot with hydrated lime and dust foliage to combat leaf miners. The fumes discourage such insects as celery or carrot flies that lay their eggs in leaves. Wood ash: Dust plants. Effective against flea beetles in vegetables such as cabbage, radish and turnips. As can be guessed, most of the foregoing ideas tend to discourage rather than to kill garden pests. The pestologists also note that beetles, caterpillars and slugs are sluggish (no pun intended) in the early morning and, with you wearing gloves, can be easily plucked from the garden if you like starting your day this way Mention of early risers leads to the final point: Encourage birds to visit your poison-free garden. They'll love every insect in it Your choice of one gate admission to Calaway Park or three tickets for rides at Heritage Park Just present this ad when checking in. Statistics show the number of full-time homemakers im Canada dropped by almost one-fifth between 1971 and 7981. Homemaking has been stripped of self-esteem as ‘women surge into the work force, said Karen Martin, a Sounselior for the Family Services Association. “Those I talk to aren't sure they're contributing,” Martin said. “You have to have a pretty strong sense of self-esteem to withstand it.” Sandy Susat, co-ordinator of women's programs at the University of Alberta, said many feminists appear to have little sympathy for their sisters at home, pointing out that staying home is an economic luxury many women can no longer afford. “We've got a long way to go.on that one,” Susat said. Allenson, 32, said she feels she constantly has to defend her decision to stay home with her two children. “T'm convinced all magazines are run by women who are divorced, with children,” she said. “They must be. Otherwise they wouldn't be so negative.” Allenson was an executive secretary at the University of Alberta for eight years. She quit when she. become pregnant. ENJOYS CHILDREN “I want my children to be brought up according to our values and our lifestyle,” she said. “I'm here for my kids all day long. I'm enjoying their childhood.” Another consideration in staying at home, she said, is lack of adequate day care. “Most day care is not up to the standards I would consider.” Once a week, “at great inconvenience to everybody concerned,” Allenson works as a volunteer at the Volun teer Action Centre. “It gives me an opportunity’ to go out and meet people.” She said volunteer work is downgraded. “I seldom mention it because the attitude seems to be that I have nothing better to do than stand around licking stamps.” But Allenson notes when someone is needed to chaperone school children on a school trip or make pan: cakes for a special function, housewives are the first to be called on. “A lot of working mothers should keep this in mind when they're downgrading homemakers.” Our Action Ad Phone Number is 365-2212 High Quali Lew Prices” Before you build - Make The Comparison! !
