This is not exactly an easy task since our jaded genera- tion is prone to be very skep- tical about something not readily explainable by scien- tific research. A book contain- ing children’s letters to God expresses that mindset rather well. One little boy wrote: “Dear God: Your book has a lot of zip in it. I like science fic- tion stories. You had very good ideas, and I would like to know where you found them.” — Your reader, Jimmy. I want to say, without apol- ogy, that I fully accept the miraculous elements con- tained in Holy Scripture. After all, it is that which makes Christianity unique as op- posed to other religions such as Hinduism or Buddhism. If one wishes to subtract the miraculous from the Gospels which would involve removing such stories as Je- sus changing water into wine, bringing that dead youth at Nain back to life, or the ac- counts of Jesus’ own resurrec- tion, one might just as well disregard the entire Bible. Something similar to what would be left can be found also in other sources. Belief in the miraculous is intimately tied up with the person of Jesus Christ. As John wrote in his Gospel: “Jesus did many other miraculous signs. . . but these are written that you may be- lieve that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by be- lieving you may have life in his name.” (John 20:30-31) Note: What the Gospels call for is belief in Jesus not mere- ly as a good man or even as prophet but as the eternal God who stepped into human his- tory. Doing so for our eternal Pulpit & Pew St. Peter Lutheran Church Rev. Glen BACKUS rescue. Belief in the miraculous is also essential for a basic;prac- tice of Christianity, namely, prayer. In prayer we regularly ask god for miracles. After all, if we were capable of accom- plishing such things by our- selves, we would not pray. Indeed, belief in the mirac- ulous may not take place with- out some struggle. My personal difficulty when it comes to a miracle, which is usually deseribed as something which transcends the ordinary laws of nature, is to know where the line is to be drawn. That marvelous explo- sion of color which I find in a flower garden at this time of year for me has always far ex- ceeded what I would class as “ordi ” ; Even though babies are conceived and born with dulling frequency, can we hon- estly class that as non-mirac- ulous? When it comes to our own human make-up, must we not exclaim with the in- spired psalmist: “I am fearful- ly and wonderfully made.” (Ps. 139:14). But the greatest of all mira- cles in Scripture is the cross of Jesus Christ. Though it in- volved suffering and death, out of that came new life not only for Him but for all who spirituall, ly lean on Him as the Saviour. LIBRARY LADIES TE call the library at 365-7765.
