Think Pink or Blue Thoughts When Temperature’s Rising Married couples can sig- nificantly increase the chances of having a baby boy by following a simple method, says a Harvard researcher. Dr. Elizabeth Whelan, a research associate on the staff of the Harvard School of Public Health and author of the book “Boy or Girl?” said the method will boost the chances of having a boy from 50 to 68 per cent. Ifa couple wants to have a boy, they should have sexual intercourse on the fourth to sixth day before the woman starts to ovulate, she said. “And once you have!dcne that, use a contraceptive device around the day of ovulation,” Dr. Whelan suggested. “Your chances of having a boy are 68 per cent if you follow this method. Normally, any- body's chances of having a boy are 50-50, so this increases your chances by 18 per cent. “You won't always be successful, but you can shift the odds in your favor.” The trick is to determine when the woman is ovulating, Dr. Whelan said. ‘Western Canada School of uctloneering Ltd, Uy Schools’ Licencing Act, A.S.A. 1970, C.368. For particu- lars of the next course write: Box 687, Lacombe, Alberta or phone 782-6215 Normally, ovulation occurs in the middle of the day of your cycle, to get a baby bo: i on the cycle. For example, if a woman has a 28-day cycle, ovulation normally occurs on the 14th day, and usually lasts for 24 hours. A woman can more pre- cisely determine when ovula- tion begins by taking her temperature every morning, Dr. Whelan said. “When a woman ovulates her temperature rises very slightly, usually from one- eighth to three-quarters of a degree,” she explained. “When you see the tem- perature begin to rise, then it is. likely that this is the beginning of ovulation. “Ifyou have your expected rise in temperature on the 14th y, have n 8th, 9th, and 10th days of your cycle.” If you want to have'a girl, Dr. Whelan said, have inter- course at the beginning of the rise in temperature that signals ovulation. Avoid intercourse during the-few days prior to ovulation, she added. “You want to conceive as the temperature is rising, not when it has already risen and is NAY. ae pivs, r ectto" Community Concert in Trail Kicks Off Canada Music Week | ser University will present on, ° Friday evening, at 8 p.m. in St. ° Andrew's Anglican Church; a { concert entitled “Environmen- ° + taland Computer Compositions : from Simon Fraser Univer- ; Nov. 19 to 26 marks the 17th annual observance . of Canada Music Week, sponsored nationally by the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers’ Associations, The Trail district branch of the association has been mak- ing plans to promote Canada Music Week on the local scene.
