CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, March 16, 1979 GRATULATIONS astlegar Savings — Credit Union Aiea FARA Ss = , MAATIL EI NISMS IL ISS IN SSA PLON III SAIS i The History of Castlegar Savings Credit Union The first meeting of the Charter Members wos held in Mrs. Wvy Hill's residence early in 1949. Not all of the charter members attended or ever became Credit Union Members, i PAshaceseseaens. “Mr. Credit Union" the one and only "Ace" H. M, Bailey attended as the Founder afnd gave us guidance. iB We came away with $45.00 in share capital and another $9.00 in initiation dues, it was decided by proper motion that Loyd Groutago be President and Esther Loeblich be Treasurer on cn Interim Sasis. Mrs. Loeblich was working part-time for Castlegar Paint Shop and the owner welcomed the idea of her perfarming this function on his premises, rent free. ae With a lot of help from Rossland Credit Union Officers, Mike Driscoll, Dan Burnett, Walt Bishop, Ace Bailey, etc:, ‘as wellas Larry Goetz and Freda Corneleus of the then Trail Credit Union, we slowly crept through the initial stages. * One of Castlegar's most prominent citizens got us going in high gear by makinga $500.00 deposit. ‘Soon we had our first loan application, and, as you could well imagine, this wos approached with caution. By this time we had our various committees properly constituted to perform thelr required functions, At the end of the first year, after paying a very nominal share dividend ond a:puny patronage refund, there was the sum of $15.00 Jeft over. It was moved at our first annual meeting, seconded and duly passed, that the $15.00 go to Esther Léeblich for her year’s work. 3 : 5 The following year, as we grew to $3- or $4,000, Mrs. Loeblich, as Treasurer, was allowed to make personal loans not exceeding $35.00. Through a strange coincidence she and Dick Elliott, the Manager of the Bank of Montreal (he was the first full-time }), fou each other on the credibility of the small borrower.
