A recent letter mentioned the chcap media sen- sationalism covering these reunions and how some adoptive parents are made to feel like “interim” parents, waiting for a now-mature birth mother to show up. ‘ You said it is unfair to general- ize about birth mothers, that “many suffer a lot” when they give up their children, That state- ment is a gross generalization in itself. Adoption does not always mean a cute, cuddly 3-day-old infant delivered into the arms of a waiting couple by a grieving-but- proud unwed teen-ager. Our adopted daughter, who came to us when she was 4 years old, was the victim of profound sexual abuse and severe neglect by both her parents. The difficul- ties in raising such a child are see a nice gentleman who has since proposed. I have put off giving him an answer because I felt that I was being unfaithful to my deceased husband. Yesterday while cleaning out a closet, I came across an old wal- let that belonged to my late:hus- band. It contained two pictures of our children and two photos of a married woman co-worker. The pictures were about 15 years old.His co-worker was married then and still is, I liked her a lot. Why would a happily married man carry two pictures.of a mar- tied co-worker? In the 35 years of our marriage, he never carried my picture in his wallet . four weeks’ salary. On June 24, : we drove 200 miles to the hospi- tal for the operation, Can you imagine being willing i to have surgery that involves an incision from the middle of your. stomach to the middle of your back just to help someone? Can you believe that our family was willing to let her do this for melMy sister gave me a gift of After the surgery, her only comment was, “I'm not a hero, It's only a kidney. I'm the one that God blessed. You would have done the same for me." > Sharon's kidney is working wonderfully well. In fact,.it start- ed to fi on the enormous. Many have i al,physical and neurological problems as well as learning dis- abilities, which are often the result of drug abuse during preg- nancy. What am I going to tell my daughter, now 7, when she starts to ask questions about her"réal” mother and father? So far, I've explained that not all parents are able to care for and love a child, and that it’s better to find a mommy and daddy who can. That story will do for a while but before long she’s going to ask questions that demand specific answers. Should I tell her that her par- ents lost three other children to the courts and never bothered to try to get them back? That they sneaked out of town one step ahead of the law and have been on the nun ever since? ‘What is my child going to find if she begins a search for her birth parents? They could be dead from a drug.overdose or in jail. Could she ever hope to under- stand or cope with knowing what kind of people they really were? T’ve given this dilemma a great Weal of thought and have con- cluded that, for these kids, no“ answer is the best answer and no search is by far the best option. I am not signing my name for obvious reasons. — Sacramento Parent. Dear Sac.: ‘As you probably know, I do not recommend these hes, based on the hi ing experiences I've been privy to over the years. In all fairness, however, I should tell you that some searches have resulted in happy reunions. As for what to tell your daughter when she gets old enough to become profoundly inquisitive, the naked truth is always better than the best- dressed lit Dear Ann Landers: This problem has been bothering me for a long time and I really do need an unbiased point of view. A member of our family always shows up at funerals with a camera. She is constantly click- ing away, getting Close-ups of people who are grieving. The more dramatic the situation, the better she likes it, I have never seen anyone do this, Ann. It seems like an outra- geous invasion of privacy, not to mention poor taste. ‘What do you think about this? Am. I:being .overly ‘critical because F don’t like her? Please ‘espone: in Print. — I'm From Dear} Missouri: That family member should be told in very plain language that a funeral is not an appropriate occasion to indulge.in her hobby. Since you are the one who was annoyed enough to write to me, I suggest. that you do the honors. ,. Dear Ann Landers: My. hus- band died in'1988, Our marriage ‘was wonderful, Ten months ago, I started to I am deeply hurt and have come to the conclusion that he had an affair with this woman. With this discovery came the feeling that I no longer have to be tied to my husband, and I have accepted my friend’s marriage Proposal, My children think I am replac- ing their father arid they are unhappy. Part of me feels that if their father had a secret affair, it should remain a secret. The other part of me says I should tell my children so they would not be so bitter about my remarrying. — Freedom Anonymous, Dear Freedom: Say nothing to sully your husband's image. You need not drag your discovery into the picture to justify your remar- riage. After three years of being alone, your children should be thrilled that you have someone with whom you can share your life. Dear Ann Landers: Over the years I have read so many letters in your column from family members who do not get along. Such letters make me sad because so much in life. ' In October 1990, 1 was told that I had to go on dialysis due to kidney failure. When I phoned my sister Sharon Balloun, she said, Dialysis can be very con- fining and difficult. I want to give you a kidney.” At the time, she was the only possible candidate for a living donor. We went through the tissue testing process and Sharon was a perfect match. I told my sister that I would wait for her to get some time off, but she insisted on doing it imme- diately even though it cost her table, I came home the sixth day . after surgery, a little sore, but that didn’t last, long. After 10 days I felt wonderful. Ann, I know this letter is awfully long, but please try to print as much of it as you can. I'd like to let everyone know how wonderful it is to have a loving family. — Bonnie Sayre, Spring- + dale, Ark, Dear Readers: As this column was going to press, we learned that Bonnie had just passed away. My heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of this coura- geous woman. Bonnie's letter tells a beautiful “father, Lam 22, Bob was over 50 when he married my mother. She ‘was a wonderful woman bit:, unable to compete with Bob's memory of Margic, so they divorced, I have lived with my father since I was 6 years of age.’ » I think it is silly for my, father to buy a house in Illinois so he can be near Margie, He never lis- tens to me, Ann, Maybe he will listen to you. Please tell him he's crazy. — D., Glendale, Calif. Dear Glendale: Since Margie now is married to Allen (and newly wed at that) your dad may be in for a disappointment, but I wouldn't say he's 's crazy, If Pops wants to buy a house in Illinois, why not? Maybe Margie knows some nice widow she can fix your Dad up with and every- one could have a jolly good time. Gem of the Day: Love is — never having to say “How much is ir?” Dear Ann Landers: My hus- band and I nave a difference of opinion regarding the upbringing of our 13-month-old child. Here's the problem: My mother, who temporarily lives with us, was bom in Ger- many but speaks i “days — one is that things may never get back to normal, the other is that they are already nor- . mal.
