Hon Clifford Sifton, a member of Laurier’s cabinet and minister of the interior, is now journeying towards Ross- land and expects to arrive here to-mor- row. He willbe well received as the board of trade and members of the city council will prepare a reception. During his tour, at every stopping place the minister has been besieged with petitions and delegations asking for support for their section’s particular needs. He has been interviewed on every phase of the Klondike situation— telegraph lines, royalty on gold, railroads the most feasible routes and in fact, every thing that could be thought of. The honorable minister has already made arrangements for a monthly mail service to Dawson and will encourage the north trade by having the royalty on gold reduced. He isalso of the opinion that the government will erect treasure houses in the gold belt so that miners may store their gold, and besides be af- forded proper police protection in get- ting the gold from the country. The minister has not taken hearsay reports about the condition of things in the north but has just returned from inves- tigating and , inspecting the conditions himeelf. In regard to the article that appeared inthe Miner thie morning, regarding finances, the mayor styled it as, ‘such a glaring misrepresentation of facts and figures as to entitle the compiler to be ranked among the financiers of the world.”” Ald. They ordered two printers to leave the boarding house of the Recorp, which they refused to do and were promptly expelled from the Union for not doing s0. They have no more secrets in their order than a lot of school children and therefore every thing that occurs in their meetings is bandied upon the street and It is not #0 much an open miners ‘Howto Win a Strike.” The present foreman in the Miner composing room stated some weeks ago that the fight with the.Recoxp was only the be- ginning, and if they succeeded in break- ing up the Recorp boarJing house the miners would follow by attacking the mine boarding houses. A well informed mining man said: ‘‘I see through it all very plainly, the fight against the Rr- corp is only an opening wedge, and if it wins the miners will foliow. The miner’s union here is ran by those who were prominent in the Cour: de Alene. Trouble is what they are after and if it comes a reign of terror is liable to fol. low.” It looks like there might be something in this talk for the Miners’ union came forward very puickly with their ‘“‘sym- pathy”’ refusing even to investigate the trouble between the Rxzcorp and the printers.
