‘ cs Castlegar News _oiober 29,1906 r Iraq restores Babylon ruins By SUBHY HADDAD BABYLON, Iraq — The crumbling ruins of ancient Babylon are heing restored to their lost splendor. In scorching heat, Iraqi archeologists and construe- tion workers from China, South Korea, Egypt and Sudan are strengthening de- cayed foundations and begin- ning to rebuild the city that flourished for 15 centuries. For Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, reconstructing King Nebuchadnezzar's onee- mighty capital is more than a project to attract tourists. The aim is also to inspire his people in the costly and gruelling war with Iran, now in its seventh year. The president has signed an open cheque to recon struct the ancient city and revive the marvelous shape it had before the Persian ag- gression which destroyed it more than 20 centuries ago,” Babylon governor Arif Gita Suheil said in an interview. SPEND MILLIONS He would not estimate the project's cost but said the government has spent the equivalent of $38 million Cdn in the last year on a huge “tourist city” rising near the site of Babylon, 90 kilometres south of Baghdad. Suheil said hotels, rest. aurants, recreation centres, playgrounds and theatres — many designed to echo an- cient Babylonian architecture would cluster in “the big- gest tourist city in the Middle East The rebuilding of Babylon is based on ancient Sumerian and Babylonian inscriptions and drawings. The main hotel in the tourist city will re. semble the ziggurat, a temple housed in a giant terraced pyramid in the legendary Hanging Gardens — one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The gardens were a series of roof gardens laid out in terraces irrigated by water pumped from the Euphrates mentioned in the Bible and by classical authors, no cer- tain traces of them have ever been found. Nebuchadnezzar ruled an empire that included Meso- Potamia (modern Iraq). He spent 43 years Babylon, but his reign ended when the Persians captured the city in 539-588 BC. Alexander the Great died in Babylon in 322 BC, possi- bly of malaria. The city fell to ruin, and the fine clay bricks baked by Nebuchadnezzs:’: slave workers were carried off to make new buildings. Now, only scattered piles of earth and fragments of patterned bricks lie amid the foundations and lower walls excavated by German arch- water table had threatened to destroy even these re mains, but officials said the Iraqi government had done much to dry them out. REID Associated Press MANILA — Philippine Defence Minister Juan Ponce Enrile, who helped oust his former boss Ferdinand Marcos, has become the champion of Marcos supporters and the major political rival of President Corazon Aquino. Reconciliation between Marcos loyalists and Enrile, who led the military in the revolt that unseated Marcos as president last February, reached its climax last Sunday when the 62 year-old defence chief addressed about 20,000 of them for the first time since Aquino took power. As Enrile called for a communism, the crowd chanted “Down “peoples’ crusade” against with Cory,” Aquino's nickname, and waved banners with slogans such as: Cory for Communism, Enrile for Democracy.” Enrile's emergence as Aquino's major rival followed a campaign of public appearances aimed at forming a coalition of Marcos’ old constituency — the military, business class and regional power brokers. Many of them fell out with Marcos in the final year of his 20-year tenure but now feel left out of power under the government that replaced him SEES THREAT They feel threatened, not only by Communists but by a resurgent labor movement, peasants demanding land reform and political rivals appointed to local and regional positions by the Aquino government. The articles reflect some lingering uncertainty. One leading journal still insisted there is no such thing as prostitution in the country, and others said it either is not widespread or was im- ported by westerners. “It’s fully explainable by the fact that we can't always effectively oppose decadent influences from outside, from where magazines with ques- tionable pictures and ques- tionable video films are smuggled,” the Moscow youth daily Moskovsky Komsomolets say. Aquino’s advisers remain convinced there is no threat that Enrile will unseat the president, saying he lacks broad public support and the backing of the United States, still viewed as a major power broker in the Philippines 40 years after independence. Some Enrile advisers say that replacing Aquino is not the goal Instead, they say, Enrile wants to steer the Aquino government away from radical social, economic and political reforms favored by her supporters. TAKES CONTROL Regardless of prospects for success, Enrile managed to seize control of the political debate Philippine newspapers are filled with his pronounce- ments, and regent government moves appear to be in response to his demands. Last week, Aquino promised tough action against the Communists and promised to dismiss incompetent local officials appointed by her administration. That may have placated conservatives, but to many of her liberal and leftist supporters it appears she is knuckling under to the hardline Enrile, since the pledges fulfil two of his demands. Enrile, a successful lawyer before signing on as Marcos’ defence chief in 1970, has deftly turned the insurgency issue into a political asset although it could have been a personal hability has Soviet customers at other spots.
