Jove had given ‘on earth the body lies ated einimaen remembered eswax: Sweet smell of success By GERRY ARNOLD HALIFAX (CP) — After Heinz Skiba’s honey business went sour, he tasted the sweet success of bees- wax, From small barn in Faweet Hill, N.B., The Honey Tree Farm turns out thousands of unique beeswax ornaments for Christmas trees. The unusual decorations, which sell from $2 to almost $30, have become one of the hottest items on the Atlantic craft show circuit. At the busiest time of year, the company turns out 2,000 ornaments a month, The buzzing operation started as a sideline after Skiba and his partner, Wolfgang Westner, tried to make a living producing honey. “At first it was quite a hard time to survive,” he said, recalling how the harsh New Brunswick winter took its toll on his bees. “We had around 50 hives, but it was quite difficult to survive on this, so we decided to go and use some byproducts like bee pollen and Biba canes © Otcods te 1800 frala Wolk Uniuahd, where as a mechanical engineer for a German railway for 20 years, he had a comfortable — but boring — life. He kept bees as a hobby and came to Canada to make it his life. KEEPS THEM BUSY After Skiba and Westner, a fellow German, realized the financial hazards of the honey business, they decided to dedicate half of the business to honey and half to bees- wax. The popularity of the beeswax ornaments kept them busy, and now the honey operation has all but dis- appeared. Westner had worked with beeswax in Germany, where the industry is more than two centuries old. Skiba saw the growing popularity of the craft in Canada and decided to learn from his friend. “At this time I really didn’t know that beeswax was so popular in Germany,” Ski", who speaks with a thick German ‘accent, said at s recent craft show in Halifax. Business is brisk: They have hired two part-time workers and expect to hire two full-time people in 1988. “It is a very busy time of year,” Skiba said. “Making But the cookies didn't hold up over the holidays, so people used cookie cutters on beeswax to get « more permanent ornament. That was followed by butter moulds, and by 1900, wooden moulds were being carved for beeswax. USES LOCAL SYMBOLS “We are now doing this on our own, and we like to have native symbols of Canada, instead of using these German ones,” said Skiba, noting that their favorite designs are maple leaves and provincial Rubber duplicates are bas tem the wooden moulds, These ere filed with quid beeswax’ and a hardening agent. After the ornament is removed, it is treated to preserve the finish and polished to bring out the highlights. Skiba isn't comfortable talking about sales figures, but it is clear the business has grown fast, supplying shops all across Canada. “In my opinion it grows 2 little bit too fast, because it's better to grow slowly and keep the customers happy,” he said;“We have so much to do now we can just hardly fill the orders.” He has two goals for the business after they hire séme more hands. First, he'd like to expand to include candles, Then he'd like more bees. He'd also like to spend time properly developing that end of the business. “I learned some lessons here,” he said with a broad Scientists laud Herpes gene discovered BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES Freedom! Dr. Martin Hollenberg, as- sociate dean of research at the faculty of medicine, said he believes the University of Toronto and Tottori Uni- versity in Japan are the only institutions in the world using the microscope and the 8-D technology to view the interiors of cells. The technique was de- veloped at the Japanese uni- versity and has been refined by Hollenberg and his team of Toronto researchers. MAGNIFIES CELL Hollenberg said he takes a section of tissue, freezes it, then slicéé"It Into altrasfine sections. The tissue section is then placed on a slide inside the electron microscope, pro- ducing an image which, vith computer enhancement, can be 60,000 times larger than the cell. By using two photographs taken at angles that differ by 10 degrees, Hollenberg’s team can project both images on a screen simultaneously, magnified up to a million times. and their interiors are seen with length, height and — o¢ most important — depth. Seeing the cells on the sereen is like viewing the tops of mountains from an airplane and looking into the deep crevices that separate them. A cell's nucleus looks like a great puffball; collagen — the protein found in tissue under the skin — appears as long tube-like filaments; and a membrane surrounding a cell looks like an aerial shot of the Great Wall of China. Although strands of DNA, the cell's genetic blueprint, enough developed to see in- dividual DNA molecules or similarly small molecules. Hollenberg, who said he has found it hard to tear him- self away from the $110,000 Hitachi microscope in the last six months, believes the 3-D images will prove a tremen- dous boon for the U of T medical faculty. The technology may also permit doctors to diagnose more quickly and more ac- eurately, he said. They believe the same mech- anism controls its cousin, herpes simplex virus type 2, which causes genital herpes. The newly described gene is one of about 80 that play various roles in the herpes virus’ life cycle. However, it is the only one that stays active when people are in- fected with the virus but don't have cold sores. The re- seachers believe it is a kind of master switch that keeps all the other viral genes from kicking to life. Stephen Straus, a co author of the study, says the new work suggests that the virus has to do something to keep dormant. “It’s not just sitting there doing nothing, as had been previously be- lieved,” he said in an inter- view. If the theory is correct, it may be possible to tame the virus by exploiting this gene. The researchers suggest that if they can find a way to keep the gene turned on all the time, then they could keep the virus from flaring up and Most of the ‘time, infected SELKIRK COLLEGE — TRAM CAMPUS Invites Applications for the Position of JOB TRAINER The services of « Job Treiner are required to coordinate @ ps bag ae paces ny one-to-one eo os ‘ on Kinin: Sg Cargoitg Rosion with employers; end tending end published in the New Eng- land Journal of Medicine.
