Local merchants gave the proposed Chamber of Commerce will be waiting - $23.5 million span the thumbs up, much to the delight of chamber transport chairman John Perry. “We were very pleased to have them all come in 100 per cent,” he said Mon- day. Perry said the results confirm that downtown and south Castlegar mem- bers are united in their support for the proposed crossing, which is currently on hold pending government review. During a two-hour open session Mon- day, the new citizens group called on Castlegar city council to speak English. Referring to dealings with council and city staff as “exercises in futility,” CURB’s Jim Gouk urged Castlegar “to speak in plain language which citizens can understand.” > Gouk called the city’s open budget meeting a farce, saying Castlegar has every intention of avoiding pressing is- sues through the use of bureaucratic lan- guage. CURB president Michael O’Connor agreed, saying that Mayor Audrey Moore intends'to run the March 2 budget meet- ing her way. “Either I’m wrong or the mayor is wrong,” he told a crowd of some 60 on- lookers, “but when I think of a town meet- ing, I think of a meeting where everyone gets to ask questions.” CURB is alarmed council has asked citizens to contact the city with their questions by 4:30 p.m. today. In addition, CURB is angry that council is requesting that they have copies of any material pre- sented by citizens by Feb. 25. “This meeting has to be open and it has to be for the people,” O’Connor said. please see CURB page 4 Chamber unanimous on bridge natives should the span not survive gov- ernment cutbacks. According to Perry, member support for the bridge was unanimous, while 50 per cent of respondents said the crossing would improve their business. The chamber is still compiling infor- mation on alternatives to the bridge. Perry added that the information is based on responses from 60 per cent of the chamber’s some 130 members. The chamber’s executive will meet Thursday to finalize its strategy before making a presentation to Charbonneau Monday. VELSTOKE CALLING FOR EQUITABLE TFL SPL PAGE
