Here I was thinking that I might get a couple of weeks off before starting out on the summer's golfing activities but the beauti- ful weather we have been having has let me down, The back nine was opened for play, unoflicially, last Saturday and it Is expected that the rest of the holes will be playable by this weekend. Trying to get the jump on all the younger [ry, the Seniora are going to make a stab at it this morning, Hopefully we will have been able to get the word to moat of the gang in time for them to be there and start enjoying themselves out in God's fresh air and sunshine again, This will just ba in the. nature of a warm up so, if you do happen to miss out, don't be too upset for.we wont be starting our competitive rounds for a couple of weeks yet. The firat. official Men's Night is expected to take place Skiers Turn: Out_in Numb Paradise is Approved ” Members of the Red Moun- tain Ski Club voted overwhelm- ingly in favor of a motion to construct a high-capacity chair- lft in the Paradise Basin during ‘one of the largest gatherings in the club’s history Monday night at Trail Junior Secondary. ichool. About 340 interested ski- era turned out to indicate their feelings about the lift proposal and hear a review of the past. season at the annual spring meeting which followed. After a brief summary of the proposal and discussion Hoth for and against, , club ecretary Peter McIver moved that the membership approve the development, allowing the executive to begin work on the installation of the lift, clearing of runs and establishment of additional parking. The ‘proposal, to cost an estimated, $750,000, was, se- conded, by. Robin Siddall and. ‘carried after 296 (81, per; cent) voted in favor compared with 72 (19 per cent) opposed.» - An extraordinary resolu- tion needed: to proceed with financing was moved by treas- urer Mike Walker, seconded by past president Dave Jones and carried by a 335 to 31 margin (82 per cent). Club. president, Art Ho- ward began the pi lings, noting that a lift committee headed by vice-president Mike Delich had shown great enthu- siasm in taking -an in-depth view of the alternatives. Mr. Howard said that “a fine brief" in favor of a lift at Grey Mountain by Jack Mitch- ell was dealt with seriously. Mr. Mitchell later swung his sup- port to the majority in the spirit of pulling together. Mr. Delich noted that the committee had studied the site and financing critically through computer analysis before mak- ing its recommendation. Following the vote he said he hoped that contracts would be let by the end of the month, and that a number of firms are still under review, A tentative schedule for the development includes gain- ing the necessary clearance from various regulatory agen- cles and the start of trail layout and clearing while there is still snow on the ground. Mr. Delich said it is hoped that concrete for the towers would be poured in July, the towers erected in August and September, cable and chairs added in October and the motor and. elettrical ‘system * com- “pleted in’ November; rendering the lift’ ‘operational by the middle of the month. The main advantages of the Paradise site as outlined by committee member Kim Deane will be a 40 per cent increase in Tift capacity, a reduction in lineups, .better balance with a ‘good intermediate area to off: set the expert slopes and an upper elevation for an early tart: Among, those who spoke against the proposal was Her- man. Schnidrig,’ who felt the development would keep the club in debt for many years, He estimated that $82,500 will be spent in interset, over the seven. Occupational Drownings Increase The large number of fish- boat sinkings in the spring of 1975 pushed occupational drownings from seven per cent to 26 per cent of all drownings in B.C. last year, according to statistics released last week by the Water Safety Service of the ~Red Cross. 2 Despite the 17 per. cent increase in this one category, total drownings in British Col- umbia remained . almost | un- changed with 152 in 1975 compared to 160'in 1974. Boating accidents again accounted © for . approximatel; ‘one-third ‘of © all drownings, while swimming accidents were involved in 12 per cent and falls . into “water: from saenary, ‘objects’ 14: per cent. ‘The highest risk age group continued to be the 13 to 33-year-old, which ‘ accounted for one-third of all drownings in the province. Cross water safety director, ‘Jan Engemoen, be- Nieves.» >. “At least 41 per cent of all boating deaths are related to alcohol,” she said. The Bank of Montreal has given approval in principle for the loan that will probably carry an 11 to 12 per cent interest rate, Basil McDonnell felt it would be “Paradise Lost” in that the area would never. be the same. Bob Greene, although not in attendance due to poor health, sent a message to the meeting saying the proposal was a serious mistake, On the affirmative side, Morley Wilson supported the proposal saying that he felt the committee was composed of fine technical people who could be lost if the project was halted. He added that it would be years before the same level of progress would be obtained again. next Wednesday and I am hoping to have this in the paper in time for all you eager beavers to be ready for it, Come on out; it will be a good tuneup round before the Calcut- ta which will be run off the weekend following, The teams and draw for the Calcutta will be in next week's paper. Thave already got a couple of nine “holes in and can honestly say. that the course has wintered quite well and we could be in for a real good season of golf. I did not get the word about all sthis until the last minute, a good start, and I am typing this out in the News office at about eleven o'clock on Tuesday night, I am relying on the editor's good nature and keeping my fingers crossed ‘that she will let it in even though it is long past the deadline, Get out there and swing a few clubs, get the winter's cobwebs brushed out and start to live again, See you up at the links, Pistol Club Meets Sundavs At Kinnaird Holl — The Castlegar Pistol Club held its annual Trophy Shoot Sunday in the’ Kinnaird Hall with Derrick Rothermel named winner of the men’s aggregate and Alison Harrop winner of the women's aggregate.
