Soup or Salad Bor with 15 Different Salads "AUTOBIOGRAPHY Burgess gives us sex By ROD CURRIE Canadian Press British author Anthony Burgess has celebrated his 70th birthday by giving the world a glorious gift, Little Wilson and Big God. It’s a lusty autobiography drenched in sex, sharpened by wit and elevated by Burgess’s profound intellect. The title is drawn from the fact that the author was born John Burgess Wilson, the son of Roman Catholic Irish and Lancashire parents. He grew up in one of the toughest areas of Manchester, where his stepmother ran a rowdy, slummy pub. OOK REVIEW The book, first of a planned two volumes of “confessions,” follows Burgess from an early awakening to sexual delights, through a hilarious time at Manchester University, into an army career that was more comic than heroic, and then to Malaya and Borneo as an education officer. It covers his life with Lynne, a wife who was just as promiscuous and hard-drinking as he, and ends when he is 42 and writing like mad, under threat of an early death from what doctors misdiagnosed as a brain tumor. The book was published Feb. 25, his birthday CAST COLORFUL Burgess was blessed by being surrounded by a remarkably colorful cast of friends, relatives and enemies in his early life, all of whom provide marvellous material for his confessions. There was, for instance, the aunt who married after a 20-year courtship and who replied to Burgess’s note of congratulations with the sad news that her husband died on their wedding night And there was the unloving stepmother who was notorious for her belches. “Let it come up,” was her doctor's advice, “you can always say excuse me.” But she never said excuse me. His father was a hard-drinking pub pianist who didn't believe in Santa Claus. When he bought young Burgess a As for himself, Burgess was myopic — sort of like cartoon character Mr. Magoo. He once entered a bank, slided up to the counter and ordered a drink. Despite poor eyesight he learned to read before he went to school, and this was the only attribute that made him even mildly ling to his aries, the less enlightened of whom used to drag him off to the Saturday silent movies so he could read the subtitles for them. But sex and religion, particuarly grinding Catholic guilt over his transgressions, dominated Burgess's young life. He was only a boy when he was introduced to physical love in the form of clumsy caresses with a succession of pub maids, who lived in an attic space where his bedroom was located. He. soon. ‘becamé an advocate of the Lancashire philosophy on sex, to the effect that “if God made out better, He made it for himself.” CONFESS ALL He dutifully went to confession where he was subjected to horrifying verbal abuse by priests who gave him increasing numbers of Hail Marys and Our Fathers as penance, leaving his young knees dirty and raw. Then he would go out and sin some more. Burgess grudgingly concedes that A Clockwork Orange, which was made into a controversial movie, is his most popular work, but he says it overshadows far more worthy works among his arm-long list of novels, children's books, translations and non-fiction works. He was an extremely bright student who became a Latin scholar and later conquered an odd mix of languages. He also took degrees in music and for a long time tussled with ii ision over by ing a P or a poet. He confesses that his book of confessions is completely from memory, unsubstantiated by letters, records, clippings or even family snapshots — all of which were consumed by damp and termites during his years in the Far East. His memory may at times be faulty but it is colorful, and certainly he is candid. One modest problem with the book is that Burgess has such an intellectual bent and is so well-read, he tends to pepper his writing with uninterpreted foreign phrases and ba ah to naitTuanoant dea onda bi ghee aay om a By BOB THOMAS MALIBU, CALIF, (AP) — The surfs up, Annette and Frankie are back on the beach and all's well with the world. Ms Some things never change, and some people, too. Although they both have grown children, Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon aren't much different from the years ‘when he pursued her in Beach Blanket Bingo, How To Stuff a Wild Bikini and other mindless teenage play onetime beach lovers who move to Ohio. He is a successful car dealer who wins a trip to Hawaii. On the way they stop in California to visit their college-age daughter. ‘The movie was recently filming on Malibu Pier under the direction of Lyndall Hobbs, a newcomer from Australia. The scene had Avalon and Funicello storming up to an apartment over a bait:shop; They suspect — horrors —that their daughter is shacked up with a surfer. Could that ever have happened in one of their movies? “Never,” Funicello said. “Frankie was always trying to get. me, but my line was ‘Not without a ring.’ ” “Maybe we'd have a little kissing in the back seat of the car,” Avalon said. “That was it.” INNOCENT AGE Funicello, 43, and Avalon, 47, are pop icons from a more innocent age. She was the San Fernando Valley girl who became the most popular member of Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse Club (1955-59). She- moved into features with The Shaggy Dog and Babes in Toyland and recorded the hit singles, Tall Paul and How Will I Know My Love? He was the south Philadelphia boy who organized his own band at 14, was discovered and made million sellers with Venus and Swingin’ on a Rainbow. He starred with Alan Ladd in Guns of Timberland and John Wayne in The Alamo. The ii Ameri Pictures united the young stars in 1963 with Beach Party and the pairing continued until Fireball 500 in, 1965. “We made those pictures in three weeks — 15 working days — but we got a lot into them,” Funicello recalled. “The budget of Back to the Beach is up to $10 million, and we're shooting it in 81 weeks.” They followed separate careers. She had occasional TV shots (Love Boat, Fantasy Island) and was the nine-year spokeswoman for Skippy peanut butter; he was a headliner in Las Vegas, Atlantic City and elsewhere. In 1965, Funicello married her agent, Jack Gilardi, and_they had three children, now 21, 17 and 12. The marriage ended in 1983. “When I was divorced, I grew up for the first time,” she admitted. “I had been so very much in the arms of my father and then Walt Disney and then my ex-husband. I didn’t know how to write a cheque, much less balance a chequebook.” A year ago she married Glen Holt, a horse breeder. TOURS WITH FABIAN In the last two.decades Avalon ‘has made'a few movies and appeared on television, mostly in variety shows. He also toured with fellow Philadelphians Bobby Rydell and Fabian in a show called Golden Boys Bandstand. Like Funicello, Avalon is family-oriented. He married Kay Deibel 25 years ago, and they have eight children, ranging in age from 13 to 28. After 25 years of travel, he’s happy to be spending more time at home: “It’s a great family, four boys and four girls, which made it good for the bedrooms. Seven of them still live at home; the oldest boy just moved out a couple of months ago. “They're wonderful kids — no big drug problems, that sort of thing,” he said. “The reason is-that I have a very strong, dedicated, disciplined wife who took care of* the home while I was out there taking care of my business.” oe New works at Nelson museum ‘Take Mom Out For the Besti ~ CHEF ROY BENDICT'S DELUXE MOTHER'S DAY SMORGASBORD 4:30 p.m: to 8:30 p.m. © Cold Meat Trays * Potato Salads * Raw V ible Salad’* Greek Salads * Assorted Jellied Salads * Seafood Salads * Pickles, Olives, Relish Trays * Ambrosia Salad * Tossed Green Salad * Decorated Salmon * Decorated:-Ham Platter © Fruit Platter * Cheese Platter © Ponderosa Hip of Beet * Potato Lyonnaise ® Fried Chicken * Breaded Cod ® Assorted Desserts 13.95 We use only the finest quality products in our food preparation.
