The ozone layer protects the world from damaging ultraviolet radia- tion from the sun. Officials of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said the new agreement expands current programs for the exchange of weather information. The new atmospheric studies will look at the at- mosphere above Antarctica from both above and below, said U.S. officials. And Soviet scientists working from their research station in Antarctica will col- lect data from the ground. They will use an array of in. struments supplied and cali- brated by the oceanic ad- ministration’s national research laboratory in Boul- der, Colo. That will allow all the data collected to be compared, so that scientists from both countries can more easily share the findings. While there is not univer- sal agreement, most scien- tists consider chemicals such as chlorofluorocarbons, re- leased into the atmosphere from refrigerants and other uses, to be a likely culprit. When those chemicals are broken down by sunlight, they release chlorine, which reacts with the ozone. When boys and girls aged seven to 15 were asked why they tried a cigarette, 46 per cent said was the to start because of advertising, only two per cent agreed, said Smith, who works for the London-based Children’s Research Unit. The study, sponsored by the Canadian Tobacco main reason. Ranked second, at 18 per cent, was “to be like my friends,” while peer pressure was next at 13 per cent, said child psychologist Glen $90,000 study. While the research is still far from any application to humans, it does show that transplanted cells can con- tinue to work and affect functioning, said Howard Nornes, associate professor of anatomy and neurobiology at Colorado State University. Nornes spoke in a recent interview before presenting his work at an international symposium on implants into the brain and spinal cord. The work focused on the rats’ “flexor” reflex, the bending of a hind limb in response to a pinch. The re- flex gets stronger when spinal cord nerves secrete noradrenaline, a substance nerve cells use to commun- icate. The experiment, involving 36 rats, was designed to see if implanted _noradrenaline- producing cells would have the same effect, Nornes Said. Researchers injected some of the rats with a drug that destroys the normal nora- drenaline-containing cells. of the spinal cord. Then one group of those rats was given an implant of brain stem cells =A AUTOMOTIVE —__ ‘87 F-250 4x4's $269.10. 48 onthe. TE ° $12,912. 1-800- 663-6933 992. Another group was given an inert implant. Tests showed that the rats that got the embryonic cell implant had about a 200- per-cent stronger reflex ac- tion than did the rats that got the inert implant, Nornes said. The implant made a difference at two months and four months after the sur- gery, he said. The survey and findings were reviewed by Prof. John Jenkins of Wilfrid Laurier University before being published by the Association of Canadian Advertisers. Children were asked, among other things, if they smoked, why they smoked, their age when they first tried a cigarette and why and how they obtained that first cigarette. Only 11 per cent of those surveyed were found to be smokers, giving reasons such as peer pressure (21 per cent), habit (29 per cent) and that they liked smoking (22 per cent). Another 22 per cent said they had smoked but had quit. UNDER SEVEN Of those who said they have tried smoking, 19 per cent said they were under seven when they had their first puff. Garfield Mahood, ive director of the association, said, “The whole study is you cannot accurately determine (children's) motivation by asking them questions, particuarly with respect to advertising,” he said. “The fact is, you very seldom get an honest response from people when you ask them about advertising.” The study comes on the heels of proposed federal legislation that would extend ~ ban on advertising ot and tobacco pt! and magazines.
