Nuts, apples, dried grapes and cookies of all descriptions were hung on tree boughs along with small baskets filled with candies and sugar plums. e For this year’s tree, tiny pill bottles or matchboxes wrapped as Christmas gifts will make lovely little tree ornaments when hung with gold or silver cord or ribbon. Plan to have a few “real” gifts or candies, small bars of soap or potpourri hanging on the tree for unexpected guests bearing gifts. e Children can make old fashioned paper decorations such as paper fans using gift paper, perhaps color co-ordi- nated to go with parcels under the tree. To make a paper fan, cut a strip of gift wrap 9 by 8 inches with pinking shears and pleat it sideways. Stitch the pleats together at one end with needle and thread or bind with tape. Open out the fan and tie to the tree with coordinating ribbon. As the busy Christmas social season gets underway, it's nice to have some thoughtful gifts tucked away for a favorite hostess. Here are some ideas: e A small coffee mug with an old fashioned motif, filled with tea and spices, makes a lovely hostess gift. As well, a tiny wooden shaker box (filled with fruit and nuts, bath oils or a fancy hanky) and hung on your hostess’ Christmas tree is another novel idea. Christmas candles also make much appreciated favors at this time of year. ¢ Homemade hostess gifts always have extra impact. Make up a hamper of goodies, for instance, by padding a wooden fruit box or basket with colored tissue paper and nest a selection of jars con- taining such items as home- made mincemeat, jam or chutney inside. Cover the outside of the box or basket with Christmas wrapping paper and tie a big floppy bow on one corner. e A sweet scented old fashioned pomander is easy to create and makes a wonderful hostess gift. Stick a whole orange with cloves and then roll it in a mixture of cinnamon, nutmeg and all- spice. Tie a length of ribbon around it long enough for hanging in wardrobes. Street vendors in the Wrap your gifts properly To make sure that a gift wrapping session is enjoy- able rather than frustra: be sure to leave plenty of time to do the job properly. A sturdy work-surface that won't be damaged by glue spills or scissor scratches is a must. And before beginning, make sure all your supplies are on hand including boxes, paper, adhesive tape or glue, ribbons, bows, gift tags, colored pens or markers, tissue paper, Christmas seals and scissors. Here are a few tips to make gift wrapping special: e@ The most important characteristic of a good-look- ing parcel is neatness. This means using the right size sheet of paper for the job, and of the correct weight to fold smoothly. Thick, heavy papers are unsuitable for tiny packages, enormous presents may need two sheets of paper taped together, or, better still use a gift wrap roll which lets you cut exactly as much as you need. If you have ting, several gifts to wrap, rolls may be the most economical route to take. e It’s much simpler to wrap a solid square or oblong shape than to struggle with something awkward. So start early to collect an assortment of empty boxes and always pack breakable items in shredded tissue. e The well dressed package shows no raw edges so be sure to choose paper long enough to fold over the edge. Turn box bottom up so seam is on underside. Wrap paper snugly around box and ée- cure with tape. Fold in end, tucking in as far as possible to top and bottom edges. Cut off top point, fold under and tape. Pull up. remaining Welcome! pS=ze, piece, fold edge in and tape in place. o Wrap a gift without tape different colors of ribbon this way. Gift wrapping can be as simple or as you by tying with pr ribbon. A dressmaker’s tape is the best way to measure: double the width and the breadth of the parcel and add four times its thickness plus four inches. This will give enough ribbon to wrap com- pletely around each way. Tie on a separate bow before attaching trimmings. @ Ready-made bows are easiest to use, but curling ribbon is also effective and easy to do. To curl paper ribbon, grip a piece roughly two to three feet long firmly many pieces of ribbon as you like and tie together on pack- age. You can also combine Y. make it.
