May 24, 1989 Oceans reporte WASHINGTON (CP) Two Canadian scientists have reported strong new evidence that the world’s oceans are slowly but steadily rising, a finding yey say_probably means the earth's atmosphere is Warming up While the report may prompt visions of New York or London being slowly buried under the sea, the real danger is that the world’s climate may “be changing, perhaps because of the so- called greenhouse effect, University of Toronto geophysicists W. Richard Peltier and Mark Tushingham said ina study published in Science Magazine. “Our analyses should not be con strued as proof that global climate warming due to the enhanced greenhouse effect (or some other unknown, cause) is occurring," they cautioned in the journal published by the American Association for the Ad- vancementof Science ‘lt would not be surprising, however, if the direct action of the ex- pected enhancement of the greenhouse effect were first observed through an indirect response such as an increase in global Measuring changes in global climate is a complex task and researchers tend to disagree about the results. Weather ea level. varies considerably ffom year to year, making it hard to detect trends. For example, while some researchers contend temperature records show a global warming over the last century, others say that the apparent rise was caused by city growth around weather stations raising local readings, or other special circumstances. However, maity scientists believe the greénhouse effect is already at work on the world’s climate, but proof has been evasive The theory is that the burning of fossil fuels and other human activities create gases that trap the sun's heat and cause temperatures at the earth's surface to slowly climb with poten tially devastating environmental con sequences. The global sea level is rising by bet- ween 2.0 millimetres and 2.4 millimetres year, Peltier and Tushingham concluded. = Their study differs from previous at Lempts to gauge global sea level trends because it filtered out the lingering ef fects of the lee Age, which ended roughly 6,000 years ago, Tushingham said in a telephone interview UNSURE OF EFFECTS Because scientists have been uncer tain of these effects, they have tended to discount previous reports that the global sea level has been on the rise. Tushingham said the melting of the enormous ice sheets that built up during the Ice Age initially drove up the level of the world’s oceans. d rising | But the level has been slowly falling for the last several thousand years due to the sagging of the ocean floor under the increased weight of the water, he said. When these effects were filtered out, “what We got was an even larger in: creast in sea level than was previously reeorded,"’ he said. Their work is. significant, Tushingham said, because it “allows people to see a pure signal in place of a signal that previously was con- taminated”’ by other effects. “It’s probable evidence of some sort of global warming, but we may never be able to tell whether the warming is man-made or due to natural causes,"’ Tushingham said, LIMITED QUANTITY $-P-E-C-I-A-L-$ -6 CU.
