The only place to sit was the gas tank. Johnny therrefore sat on the gas tank and held onto the steering wheel, while Pearl sat on the gas tank and held on for dear life t6 Johnny, Rocks from the ‘gravel road flew around them bottf like a meteor shower When they reached Castlegar, Mr. Blaylock roared past them in his big black shiny car and was waiting at the ferry d by the ive Jimmy David: When they chugged in behind him, he got out, walked back, smiled and said: ‘1 was wondering whether you were going to lose your girl or not."’ Johnny didn’t The wooden spokes of the Model T eventually became too loose so Johnny replaced them with wire spokes in the wheels. In 1939, he sold his faithful friend to Harry Crockett, a Model T collector. He wanted those wire wheels. The Androsoffs moved to Castlegar in 1955 and Johnny retired from Cominco 14 years ago after a serious accident and little compensation. There are eight grandchildren, also very much loved. At this point in the interview, Pearl chimed in with, “*In those days, my friend, almost everybody was poor but there was always something on the table.’’ And not only for one’s self, it should be noted, but anyone else, plus a helping hand as well. While material goods may have been in short supply, there was a richness of spirit, a helpfulness and kindnes no one was richer in this respect than the Androsoffs. It was a kinder, more cooperative time in ‘*Auld Lang Syne"’ than in this present period of cynical ‘*me first-ism’’ and spiraling bureaucracy, and | miss it sorely. A heart attack five years ago further injured Johnny in body but not in spirit This has been another brief look at an age which has past, an age of innocence. Though imperfect, it was continued from pog to reach the job more easily, but when the Castlegar Co- operative Transportation Society was formed in 1940 they moved back to the Robson property. Johnny built a hause, a banya (steam bath) and installed 3,200 feet of waterline from the top of the bench behind the townsite. The wooden pipe he obtained from Bil! Ozeroff of Ozeroff's Jewelers. He had a boring machine which reamed out many of the logs which went to the water pipes used to irrigate the Robson area. (Has anyone got a section of the old wooden pipe? The Heritage Society would like it.) The job at the smelter enabled Johnny to once ‘again buy a licence for his aging Ford, so one day he took it to work to strip it down and re-build it. (li may come as a surprise to some more recent citizens that the smelting and concentration of metals was not the only work done by the workers at Cominco in those far-off days.) TED BRISTOW Castlegar United Church Sometimes politics really bothers me. Don’t get me wrong. I’m glad we have politics. It means we have some democracy. But it bothers me when winning is the only name of the political game, when politicians smear the other side while pretending they are right and virtuous, when government members can't be honest with the people because they prefer to pro- tect the reputation of the party I hope the day will come when politicians cooperate together to come up with the best they can for all the voters. It seems to me what politics needs is some good old-fashioned love- your-neighbor religion Sometimes sports really bothers me, too Don't get me wrong. I'm glad we have sports. It means we have some recreation and fun. But it bothers me when winning is more important than playing, when a multi-million-dollar contract be- comes the goal of athletes, when fighting physically and verbally re- places sportsmanship I hope for the day when sports will be primarily about the enjoyment of participating and the appreciation of watching It seems to me that sports needs some good old-fashioned let's-enjoy life religion Sometimes business really bothers me Don't get me wrong. I'm glad we have business. It means our lives are organized to provide. incomes and to produce and distribute goods and services But it bothers me when power and control replace service as the name of the game, when profit measures success more than quality of life, when lean and mean becomes the new golden rule It seems to me that what business needs is some good old- fashioned people-first religion Sometimes feligion itself really bothers me Don’t get me wrong. I’m glad we have religion. It means we are reminded of the guidance and help of God But it bothers me when perpe- tuating the organization becomes more important than spiritual faith, when entertaining and pleasing a congregation replaces the challenge to work with God for a better world, when you get the feeling some religious group is more interested in what you can do for them than in what they can do for you. I could go on, couldn't I, to other institutions. of our modern life that are almost as harmful as they are helpful, because their original good purpose has been replaced by some lesser motives What I see happening to our in- stitutions suggests to me, theologi- cally, that sin infects not just indi but the structures of our society. 1 think that institutions, not just individuals, need to repent and turn to God. I would like to see society's institutions take seriously the prayer, ‘‘Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.’ mention viduals, What I see happening to our in stitutions suggests to me, person- ally, that 1, and you, need to do our part to help whatever organization we are part of become more honest and humane. Otherwise. how moral no matter and well-meaning we may be as individuals, we may still be more a part of society's sins than of society's salvation Union ratifies wage pact Members of the Pulp, Paper and Woodworkers of Canada Local 26 have ratified a three-year contract with Selkirk College giving them wage increases of $1.10 per hour in the first year, $1 per hour in the second year and seven per cent in the third year of the agreement which took effect Jan. 1. The increases add up to 23 per cent over the term of the agreement which expires Dec. 31, 1992, Selkirk College’s director of personnel and industrial relations, Barry Jackson, said in a news release. With this contract, implementing pay the college is equity which eliminates incremental pay levels for clerical employees, reduces the number of pay grades to seven from 18 and recognizes the principle of rewarding work of equal value with equal pay, the release said. “This set of negotiations was fast, fair and friendly,”’ Sigrid Shepard, chairman of the Local 26 negotiating committee, said in the release. She complimented the college on the in- stant implementation of pay equity and acknowledged that, in this area, the college demonstrated commit- ment and leadership. The equity clauses took effect Jan. 1. The con- tract was ratified by an 82-per-cent margin of Local 26 members. Brian L.
