Following a delicious dinner of home-cooked fare, the students enter tained the group by sharing their im- pressions of Canada and Castlegar, while others performed traditional Korean songs, and many joined in a truly international rendition of **Yellow Submarine.” Some of the students were dressed in the traditional constumes of their homeland, adding more of an inter national flavour to the evening. “I don’t miss Japan at all,’’ said Yuzo Tsukamoto, a 22-year-old student from Tokyo who is studying English at the college. When asked what she liked best about Castlegar, 17-year-old Regina Lai from Hong Kong replied, ‘*The people!”’ “Tt takes a very special young person to come here from overseas,” said An drews, ‘and. we want to emphasize how happy we are to have them.”* Most international students atten- ding Selkirk College full-time are pur suing a university degree from a Canadian university. Paterson is married and has two children. Paterson began drawings at an early age, moved on to oil painting after high school, and started to work with a draughtsman’s pen in 1967. The rich heritage of the West Kootenays fascinated him, and at the same time he was very aware of the neglect and sub: sequent disappearnace of many of the heritage structures, the release says. He began to draw these old buildings, and to research them as well. The out come was the invitation by a friend to begin a monthly column in the East West Kootenay Review, which has continued to the present Paterson takes many hours to com. plete each sketch, sometimes more than 16 hours. He works from a photo or quick drawing made at the site, composing and drawing the sketch en- tirely in pencil and then inking it in with the draughtsman’s pen. The im petus for devoting so much time to each sketch is from his .eatization that these are changing or disap- pearing at an alarming rate, the release says. sites Already some have been reproduced as postcard sets. A new series of five full reproductions has been prepared, with more to follow. For the future, Paterson would like to start to work in colour while continuing with scuba diving, writing, and all his many other interests, the release adds.
