Red Mountain Racers Place Well In Competitions.on Weekend — Diana (Dee Dee} Haight of Fruitvale became the new Canadian Juvenile Women's Alpine Ski Champion by. winn-:- ing the girls’ Slalom Saturday at Red Mountain, Miss Haight placed second in the Downhill, Thursday and fourth in the ,Giant Slalom on Friday. Kelli Lee of Rossland came within one one-hundredth of a second from making it a one- two Red Mountain Sweep in the Slalom and placed third, just, behind Andera Baker of South- ern Ontario. Red Mountain placed five girls on the 11-member -B.C. girls’ team. Official combined standings for the girls showed Diana Haight first, Cathy Hus- er of Salmo, fifth, Kelli Lee seventh, and Alexa Wandl of Rossland 20th. Results of this game are probably known to many this morning. For Rebel fans, an account of the two games leading up to last night’s game “is being carried and is as follows: The Castlegar Rebels con- tinued their five-game winning streak last weekend, and it couldn't have come at a better time for a club which has been in the KIJHL for only two seasons. They came from behind, winning three straight over the Trail Junior Smoke Eaters to clinch the Western division championship and continued that trend with two victories over the Creston Clippers on the weekend. Five straight goals by the Rebels in the third period proved more than enough Saturday as they dumped the Clippers 8-3 in Creston. Rich Hlookoff played a steady game Saturday, making several key saves to keep the Clippers off the scoreboard. ‘The Clippers took an early lead in the first game of the series on a goal by Rolly Lund- quist, but Rebel Gord Pace, with his first of two for the night, tied it up just two minutes later. Ken Schisler found the mark late in the . frame to give the Rebels a 2-1 lead. The Clippers were the only club to score in the middle stanza, with Greg Egan doing the honors to knot the score again. It was in the third period that the Rebels came alive, scoring five markers before the Clippers again tallied. Bozek notched the go-ahead goal as well as the. eventual. winner. Pace scored: his “second<:and Bruce Martin and Brian Verigin rounded out the Rebel.scoring. Bud Heald replied for Creston. The Clippers sat out 13 minors, while Castlegar re- ceived nine. Each club had one fighting major, as well. Hauffe Services Tomorrow Funeral services will be held tomorrow from the Chapel of the Castlegar Funeral Home for Wolfgang Hauffe, aged 60, a resident of Castlegar who pass- ed away last Friday. Mr. Hauffe was born Jan. 27, 1918 in Ludom, Posen, Germany and received his education in that country. He came to Canada and B.C. in 1957, residing in Van- .couver until 1964, when he moved to the Castlegar area. He and his wife have been residents of Castlegar since their marriage in Trail in 1969. PALMER Led by Wayne McCarthy with 28 points, the Cossack's men’s basketball team avenged an earlier loss to Trail by beating them 76 - 51, This week, the men are, preparing for a tournament at Notre Dame University, where teams from Castlegar, Creston, Nelson, Grand Forks, Slocan and Trail will compete for the * Cossack Bowl. In juvenile girls’ action, the Cossacks won a tournament in New Denver, edging out Craw- ford Bay in the first game. Barb Olsen was high scorer with 16 points and 15 rebounds. In the finals, it was the MH Ladies Bowl Trophy Cossacks over the Lucerne Lakerettes 61 - 20, Sharleen Martini and Barb Olsen scored 17 points and Barb Olsen was leading rebounder with 15 rebounds, The women's basketball team finished their season with a banquet. Leska Verigin re- ceived a .trophy for most improved player and Carol Morris received a trophy for the team's most valuable play- er. In the 22 games Carol played, she scored 204 points and pulled down 230 rebounds. Rugby practices continue, beginning the first week in April.
