If you get two or less right, you should pay more attention to your gear. Three’ right is average. Four right means you know a lot about your gear. Five means you've either studied line a lot or have done a lot of fishing and found these things out the hard way. 1) Mono is stronger when wet. Tensil strength is 10 to 15 per cent greater than when dry. Lines are rated at “wet” strength. 2) Excessive heat and ultra violet light (from sitting in the sun) are the two things that are hardest on line. Rocks, sand and sticks will weaken line through abrasion or making nicks it, but that ean happen to brand new line on the first cast. 3) Not necessarily. It may simply have taken on the set by drying out on the reel. Mono absorbs around eight per cent water, so the set can be removed by getting it wet again. This re-wetting process can take several hours. 4) Mono is limper when wel, 5) Not all knots reduce line strength. The palomar and the old faithful double clinch knot used by salmon and steelheaders can be just as strong as the line. Some knots, and even the clinch or palomar, can reduce line strength by 10 to 15 per cent or more if tied pooriy. - + « If you cruise far from home, or even if you stay within a few miles of your home port, you'll find a world of helpful information in the 1979 edition of the Pacific Boating Almanac. The Pacific Northwest edition covers Oregon, Wash- ington, British Columbia and southeast Alaska. Harbors, bars, passages, inlets, bays, rivers, marinas, launching ramps, repair shops, radio telephone information and even pumpout stations are among the things listed. Numerous good aerial photos and charts supple- ment the words. Tide tables, eurrent tables and other listings vital for cruising are there. It’s truly an almanac, with the thousand and one things a boater wants to know. Don’t drive youngster to school says BCAA If you have a child just entering school for the first time this fall or enrolled in a primary grade, consider this advice from the B.C. Auto- mobile Association: Don't drive your youngster to or from school. The reason, says the auto club, is that each driving parent adds to traffic conges-_ tion around school grounds, presenting a hazard to small students. The advice applies especially in inclement wea- ther. Instead of driving chil- dren to school, the auto club recommends that parents help them learn safe walking rules — and on rainy days, provide them with well-fit- ting, light-colored raincoats and rain hats. If you drop children off on the way to work, do so within a safe walking distance. Plan to walk children to school for the first few days and meet them afterward. Get started in plenty of time, so there's no need to hurry or run. This way, they'll learn to walk safely. If there's a school bus available, walk with children to the bus for a few days and meet them at the stop when they arrive home. A child will be better ‘equipped to go it alone by then, if the parent has mapped out the safest route. The youngster should be told why it is the best way, and why alternate routes are less desirable, even though pos- sibly shorter. To select the safest route, keep the following in mind: Wherever possible, choose controlled intersec- tions for children to cross. Control may be by a mechan- ical traffic signal, an adult crossing guard or a member of the school safety patrol. At crossings with traffic signals, explain the meaning of the red-yellow-green se- quence, and the walk/don't walk signs. Teach children to start across only at the . beginning of the appropriate signal. Instruct them also to watch carefully for turning cars and explain that while the signal is an aid to safe crossing, it cannot be relied upon totally — they should lock in all directions on a 3-pce su Reg. $190. $149 master Charge Get a Jump on the fall season and save over 20% on your new suit.
