A walkout by British Columbia’s
13,000 pulp and pulp workers has been
avoided... for now.

The Industrial Relations Council.

the 10-month-old dispute.

At the request of the Pulp and Paper
Industrial Relations Bureau, mediator
Vince Ready has been appointed to help -
iron out a new three-year contract.

Ready was appointed one day before
the Pulp and Paperworkers of Canada
and the Canadian Paperworkers Union
had vowed to hit the picket lines.

“Both parties have more to say to
each other, but we’ve been having prob-
lems getting the lines of communication
open,” PPIRB president Eric Mittern-
dorfer said Tuesday.

Mitterndorfer, who requested medi-
ation, said Ready would begin tackling
the labor dispute on May 19.

He would not speculate how long the
mediation process would. take, nor
would he comment on the current deal
being offered to the two unions.
