LocdlSPORTS Rockettes return victorious from Vernon Wi Rockers hang host Sonics out to dry to capture consolation crown at Seaton tournament Jonathan Green SPORTS REPORTER The Stanley Humphries senior girls basketball team has made winning tournaments look easier than shooting fish in a barrel. For the fourth time this year, the Rockettes were handed the championship trophy, this time at the Clarence Fulton tournament Saturday in Vernon. Getting 17 points from Rhonda Dawes and 16 from Wendy . Closkey, the Rockettes cruised to a 54-35 win in the big game over Winfield’s George Elliott. Despite winning comfortably, coach Jack Closkey said the title was no more or less satisfying than the season’s three previous. “Winning and losing still isn’t a big deal,” he said. “I would like to have played better in the final, but we still have some things to work on offensively.” Meeting Vernon’s W.L. Seaton in their first game Friday, the Rockettes could have won blindfolded as they scored the game’s first 20 points for a 20-3 lead after one quarter. With the remaining three quarters just a formality, the lo- cals gradually pulled away for a 70-24 thumping. Tamara Rezansoff scored 23 points in victory, five more than Closkey’s 18. With the win, the Rockettes moved into Saturday's semi-fi- nal against Kelowna’s KLO for what shaped up to be one of their toughest tests in some time. But the locals had a surprisingly easy time of it, as they avenged a Jan. 9 loss to their Okanagan opponent with a nice 58-33 win. Dawes was a factor at both ends of the court as she scored 20 points and pulled down some big rebounds on defence. Closkey added 14 points to Rezansoff’s 13. Coach Clogkey said his squad picked an opportune time to play some of their best defence of the year. “We took their offence right out of the game,” he said. “We could have beaten them by 40 points.” Facing Elliott in the final, the Rockettes built a 14-4 first- quarter lead into a 27-14 haltime lead and never looked back. Closkey said the final wasn’t pretty, but added the Rock- ettes probably realized an effort similar to the one against KLO wouldn’t be necessary. “We didn’t play real smoothly,” he said. “A better team may have given us more trouble, but maybe the girls play when they have to.” Down the street at the Seaton tournament, the senior boys shook off an opening game 57-45 loss to Fulton to capture the consolation title. News photo by Jonathan Green Mark Perrier scored 14 points and Ryan Vatkin had 12 as Rockette Tamara Rezansoff drives the lane against Vernon's W.L. Seaton Friday. the Rockers romped to a 75-38 win over the host Sonics. Rezansoff stunned the Sonics with 23 points in a 70-24 win. With his starters taking most of the game off, coach John Ritchie said he was pleased with the performance of his bench play- ers, “That was nice to see,” he said. “A lot of the young guys got to play a lot and put up some good numbers.” Against Fulton, the Rockers came out running to lead 17-16 after one quarter. But the offence went colder than the Columbia River in January, as they scored just eight second-quarter points to trail by 10 at the half. Matching Fulton stride for stride in the second half, the Rockers were unable to close the gap and lost by 12. Despite having next-to-no shooting success from the floor, Ritchie said being able to stay close to the No. 2 ranked AA team in the province was nice to see. “We're still not playing offensively very well,” he said,“but the fact we were able to play with the No. 2 team was encouraging.” Facing Osoyoos in their second game, the locals found themselves down by 12 early in the second quarter. But rather than succumb to the Rattlers’ bite, the Rockers fought back for a 30-26 halftime lead. ~ See-sawing back and forth, the lead changed hands on numerous occasions in the third quarter with neither team able to establish a sizeable margin. In the end, though, the Rockers were the ones leading, coming out on top in a 60-52 win. Facing Seaton later that day,Ritchie utilized his bench for most of the game as the Rockers cruised to victory. = Tum time into money. 53 Ask about RRSPs at "T-Bill rates". The RRSPeople
