Not since the Crimean war, more than forty years ago, has England sent out an army on so comprehen- sive a scale as in the present crisis, says the New York Herald. A deeper interest attaches to the Transvaal campaign for this reason, as it touches more closely aristo- “cratic families and country houses throughout Great Britain and Ire- “and. A more pathetic note will sound from the news sent from South Atrica, and many a village church may have, in consequence, - additions to its war relics, such as * may still be seen recalling the great - Waterloo days, the Crimea and the Indian mutiny. From the Queen downward the upper ranks of Great Britain are * sending out their best and bravest. Now all the youth of England are on fire, And silken dalliance in the ward- robe lies. + The names among the officers whom the transports week by week are hurrying to the Cape include most of those which have been familiar as household words for centuries in English history and still fill a large space in today’s so- ciety. Admiral Dewey is receiving the heartiest congratulations upon the announcement of his engagement to Mrs, W. B. Hazen. Mrs. Hazen has long been a social favorite in * Washington. She-is possessed of ‘an attractive personality, cf grace- ful” manners and has a brilliant mind. While the date of the wed- ding is not definitely known, the understanding is that it will take ‘ place some time during November. Rumor has connected the name of the admiral and Mrs. Hazen for some time, but little attention was paid to the matter. The Oregonian says the Irish have been noted for fighting quality under the British flag. Much of the heroic work on the British bat- tlefields has been theirs. Now, in South Africa, they are keeping the Celtic record good. Captured the Irish fusiliers may be, but undoubt- edly it was at enormous cost to the Beers.
