Gretzky's three assists in the first period gave him yet

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A
new professional basketball
league that emphasizes the
complete player over leapers
and dunkers, and introduces
a stationary goalkeeper will
begin operations in 1984, its
founders said Tuesday.

“We aren't interested in
the Ralph Sampsons,” said
Med Park, a co-founder of the
new American Basketball
League and a five-year vet-
eran of the National Basket-
ball Association during the
1950s, ©

“We have decided to put
the emphasis back on shoot-
ing and basic basketball skills
like passing, picking, and
smarts,” said Park, 49, a San
Diego consultant. The other
co-founder is Curtis Rex Car-
ter, an investor from San
Diego.

ABL ticket prices will
range between $2 and $7,
with salaries paid through a
50-50 revenue-sharing plan,
Park said. College players
who fail to make the NBA
will be the main source of
talent for the ABL.

“There are probably 1,000
players graduating from col-
lege each year and 40 make it
in the NBA,” said Park. “Of
those 40, 30 are over six-foot-
eight. The kid five-foot-10 to
six-foot-two has a slim
chance, no matter his skills.”
