The data — which exclude Ontario, the Yukon and the Northwest Territories — re veal that in 1970, 299 new cancers were diagnosed each year for every 100,000 people in the country. A decade la- ter, 344 new cases were di- agnosed for every 100,000. A person with two types of cancer would be counted separately for each one. Tobacco is the major cul. prit and an aging population is another factor, Dr. Aileen Clarke, director of the On. tario Cancer Registry. said Tuesday in an interview. Ontario does not have up- to-date statisties for the inci- dence of cancer diagnosed in the population. The latest figures available show that between 1966 and 1975, the rate of new cases diagnosed annually increased gradually. But statistics about the in- creasing eancer death rate in Ontario clearly point to smoking — and lung cancer — as the major factors, Clarke said. And women are catching up to men. A 1981 report from the Ontario Cancer Research and Treatment Foundation, which finances the registry, shows that between 1949 and 1980, “male cancere deaths have been steadily increasing . . . Coiderbonk ENGINELESS RIG Captain runs tight ship By STEVE MERTL TUKTOYAKTUK, NWT (CP) — If you plan to get into a shoving match with 200 million tonnes of Arctic ice, you might want Klaus Arcis zewski at the helm. Helm is not really the right word sine Archiszewski's ves sel, the Kuiluk, is an engine- less drilling unit. But it takes all of his 14 years experience ‘ese Griishtp skipper to han- dle the newest piece of high-tech drilling equipment in the Beaufort Sea. The Kulluk, owned by Beaudril Ltd. the marine arm of Gulf Resoures Canada Inc is part of a $675 million drilling system aimed at keeping deep-water rigs on station longer than the ar rent three-month average. In its first season last year the Kulluk managed to stay out until Dee 11, drilling the Pitsiulak A-05 well to near ompletion before losing a showdown with the ice. “We got a bit icy.” says Arciszewski, whose official title is vessel supervisor, in effect captain of the Kulluk. Arciszewski apparently runs a tight ship. The hand scribbled notes left on doors are signed “Klaus,” but some- one scrawled “captain von” before the signature on one of two in Beaudril's fleet, hovers nearby to combat ice or tow the Kulluk out of trouble if necessary. Most of the Kulluk'’s Perhaps remembering the question of who was in charge of the Ocean Ranger rig wheal Tt Gapsized off the East Coast, Arciszewski says on the Kulluk his word is final. The drilling supervisor or “tool push” oversees drill- ing operations but Arciszew ski gives the orders where the vessel's safety is con. cerned. Looking for a helicopter on a calm summer day, Kulluk looks like an oversized, round harbor buoy in the middle of the Beaufort. On the north. ern horizon the pack ice seems in retreat but it can descend anytime, and quick ly. Radar and photographic surveillance keep Arciszew ski apprised of conditions. The icebreaker Kalvik, one sures which would quickly crush a conventional drill- ship. It allows the rig to move on site earlier and stay long after other ships head for Tuktoyaktuk harbor, usually Gulf exectives think the system has proved itself and expet the Kulluk's shallow water ounterpart, the Moli- kpaq drilling cisson, to per. form just as well But the technological gam- ble in the Beaufort is eclipsed risk. Physician receives suspension VANCOUVER (CP) — A Vancouver physician charged with having a sexual affair with a female patient over a period of about three months has been found guilty of in famous conduct by the Col lege of Physicians and Sur geons of British Columbia. Dr. Kenford Nedd, a gen eral practitioner, was sus. pended from practice for three months and has been trasnferred to the college's temporary medical register. “That means that his con duct must be exemplary at all times if not, then his licence could be removed,” college registrar Dr. Craig Arnold said Tuesday The college council also determined that Nedd must pay $28,500 to cover a fine and the costs of the college inquiry into the charges. The college is the govern- ing body of the medical pro- fessfon in B.C. Arnold said the decision to publicly release details of the case against Nedd marks the first time the college has re- vealed the name of a doctor found guilty of misconduct. Last month, the college said in a report to its mem bers that it would disclose to the media and public names of physicians found guilty of misconduct aid a #umhmary of their offence or offences. The report said the hames of those found not guilty and the names of the complain ants would not be disclosed. dustry.
