of-living increases in benefits
for families and the elderly
have been announced by
Health Minister Jake Epp.
As of January, family al-
lowances to parents in most
provinces will rise to $31.93 a
month for each child under 18
from $31.58 a month this
year. Payments to parents in
Quebec and Alberta vary
with the age of the children
or the number of children ina need all will increase.

Canada Pension Plan and
higher contributions to the
plan by workers and employ
ers will take effect on Jan. 1,

lead perhaps 175,000 workers
to retire early in 1987 alone.

The Canada Pension Plan
covers most of the paid labor
force outside Quebec. Quebec
has its own plan

Maximum retirement
benefits under the Canada
Pension Plan for workers
who retire in 1987 will be
$521.52 a month. Workers al
ready retired will get cost-of
living increases in their pen
sions of 4.1 per cent next
month

Cost-of-living increases in
retirement, disability and
survivor's benefits are done
automatically each year, but
other changes require the
approval of Ottawa and the
provinces.

Many changes that take
effect Jan. 1 are the result of

legislation passed by Parlia-
ment in the summer and rat
ified unanimously by provin-
cial governments in the fall.

Epp and Finance Minister
Michael Wilson have hailed
the latest improvements as a
giant step forward, but op-
position MPs and social pol-
icy analysts call them mod-
est.

In many cases, the changes
will simply allow the plan to

already part of Quebec's
Pension Plan.

Canada Pension Plan are:

In other words, people who
retire at age 60 would lose 30
per cent of their normal pen
