Cs vev 1x4 Féoi 28 City wants woodroom open By RON NORMAN Castlegar council voted 5-1 Tuesday to ask Celgar Pulp Co, to continue operating its woodroom for the company and the, Ministry of Forests to reconsider the woodroom's closure. Only Mayor Audrey Moore voted against the motion. However, mill manager Wilf Sweeney told the Castlegar News this morning that council's resolution won't change’ the company’s decision “We didn't just shut down the woodroom on a whim,” said Sweeney, who was in the audience Tuesday night when council discussed the issue. “We loked at everything.” Sweeney said Celgar has no alternative but to close the woodroom, where raw logs are made into chips for the pulping process. However, he said the company will reply to council's request in writing. “I don’t know what the council aldermen are up to,” he said, adding-later: “(If) they want a letter, we'll provide them with a letter.” Sweeney said the woodroom is still operating, despite the announcement Dec. 9 that it would be closed by the end of the year. “It's taking a little longer than we had anticipated he said. “We're just in the final stages of cleaning up all the wood,” he said. Sweeney suggested the woodroom will be completely down by sometime next week. However, he said the closure won't affect.35 workers, as the Arrow Lakes Tugboat Society, which represents workers on the tugboats, contends. “They're certainly not correct,” he said. Instead, he said only three or four workers in the mill's relief pool will have their hours cut back. He also said the woodroom won't be dismantled, but will simply be “set aside”. And he said there is nothing to say the woodroom won't open sometime in the future when economic conditions are right Meanwhile, Moore slammed the other aldermen for supporting the motion. “I have some concerns about the credibility of this council,” Moore said, adding later that once council has lost its credibility, it is difficult to get it back. “We're actually saying to the pulp mill we don't running your pulp mill in a financially sound why Moore suggested an amendment to the motion to make it more “positive.” She said council should request Celgar to reconsider the closure, and if unsuccessful should then request the mill take every opportunity to expand and create additional employment continued on page A2 Castle 60 Cents Vol. 41, No. 4
